Most nations just called themselves the equivalent of the people. or by klan names. Names like Apache,Cherokee, etc. are the result of historical contact with the Europeans, or names assigned by other nations. What I find most amazing about aboriginal history is the vast range of their trade. There were Choctow who hunted on the great plains and traded with the English in Charleston, and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf. The Chickasaw in Mississippi developed the quarterhorse by breeding horses that came from Osages who raided New Mexico.
