Shelby foote made a comment during his interviews for Burn’s civil war documentation about the response from the Union soldiers when the Confederate soldiers came out of the woods during the Pickets charge re-enactment. Shelby said there was a large gasp that came from the union troops

Shelby Foote can be heard on one of the YouTube 50th anniversary videos. There was also an 75th anniversary meeting in 1938. But I’m sure you’re aware of all that.

"If the Rebels were traitors, then more than one Union General should have been tried for treason for carrying on their friendships with former school- and unit-mates on the other side during the war."

Kinda reminds me of today's North Eastern Republicans and Democrats getting along so well.

Many of the secession bills from the Confederate states specifically call out slavery as an issue driving their decision.

That isn't to say that slavery was THE issue. There really wasn't one single issue. The causes of the Civil War were many, and highly complex in nature, including not only slavery and states rights, but also economics, industrialization, trade, manifest destiny/expansion.

And there was a HUGE disconnect between the underlying motivations of the Southern power-class and the Southern manhood that made up the rank and file of the Confederate armies.

To try to peg the cause of the Civil War on one single issue (or just elevating one issue to a "first amongst equals" status) grossly oversimplifies (caters to the low-information voter, I suppose) and does a great disservice to both history and the memories of those who fought, bled and died on both sides of the matter.

No one talks about the high tarrifs on cotton and goods perpetratrated by the North on sales of goods and then resold to Europe for profit!
The South was carrying the Nation on Items from food to textiles! The same as today but on an individual basis!
The Government is taking the working class to the cleaners!

Or Second War of Independence.

We beat the tyranny of a powerful central government the first time.
We lost out to a powerful central government the second time.

I'm waiting for the tie-breaker.
