We went through that before. The city had been occupied by the US, and reoccupied by the south. After being retaken, the buildings used by the south when they reoccupied were burned. Still, rather a lot of buildings did survive.

Sherman was brilliant, and fought a generous and magnanimous campaign. Hood was brash, rash, and trash, and did more damage to the confederate states than ever he did to the north. Yet you condemn Sherman and never do I hear a word of criticism from you of Hood.

That picture was John Lincoln Clem, ‘the drummer boy of Shiloh’ who ended his career as a Major General in 1916, the last Civil War veteran on active service.

Many lost causers choose to forget about the damage Hood was responsible for, or even blame Sherman for Hood’s damage.

You’re right.

You sound like a rapist.

Wrong side:

"The men have behaved themselves the best I saw them either home or abroad. Every man has seemed to be on his good behavior since we entered Atlanta. The women have been dressed up waiting for our men to commence raping but they have waited in vain. There has not been a single outrage commited in this city, a circumstance that the people say they cannot say for the rebel army." -- William Dunn, Union Army surgeon, letter to his wife on September 27, 1864 "

And they respected one another

Four years shooting at each other was enough for them.

Unlike the race bait assclown brigade here

With comments like that, you get the degree of respect you deserve.

That was a well-written piece. Thanks. The only thing that I would add was that both sides completely misjudged the duration and intensity of the war and hence their respective manpower requirements. It shows in the length of service periods they chose (and later had to amend).

Not trying to hijack the thread here, but I just went out to Amazon to look for a book a friend recommended (WWII) and the first two books that popped up in the advert section were Last Chance for Victory and Lost Triumph.

Considering that I hadn’t actually looked for either book on Amazon, it shows how stuff we all write here gets caught up in the great internet tracking matrix ...

The Denver Post link photos are TERRIFIC. Had never seen that seated General Dan Sickles photo before. He is all smiles in the photo. He lost his leg at Gettysburg & could have lost the battle in his moving of the Union 3rd Corps July 2nd!

PS Another trip to Gettysburg tomorrow!
