GOP not seizing chance to stun Dems (Gabriel Gomez: Massachusetts)
Trib ^ | June 15, 2013 | Salena Zito

Republicans have talked about pursuing a different kind of candidate since what seems like forever. Heck, the national party even convened a special, secret task force just for that purpose late last year, after losing key demographic groups such as women and Hispanics.

Yet, given exactly the kind of candidate they hire people to find out in the hinterlands, Republicans are oddly not engaged with helping him cross the finish line in a special election that would significantly stun Democrats.

Gabriel Gomez is a Massachusetts Republican running to fill John Kerry's vacated U.S. Senate seat; the 47-year-old political newcomer is within striking distance of wounding Democrats right where it hurts.

Gomez, a first-generation American whose parents came here from Colombia, has a compelling life story that includes an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and service as a Navy SEAL and fighter pilot. He is Roman Catholic, personally pro-life; fluent in Spanish; a father of four who met his wife when he was deployed as a SEAL in Grenada, where she was a Peace Corps volunteer.

His opponent, Congressman Ed Markey

...

Democrats know they have a problem; privately, they worry about Markey's long, unremarkable Washington career. So they have called in the two best reinforcements they could think of: outside money and some speechifying by Barack Obama.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, crickets — meaning silence.

Then compare Gomez with Markey. Markey does not even pretend to be against abortion. He is for abortion at any time, on demand. The problem with your thinking is you are forgetting this is Massachusetts. If AKin can lose in MO and Mourdock can blow Indiana, which pro-life person In your super knowledge would win in MA?

if would be ironic and comical if the next Scalia SCOTUS nominee gets his only YES vote in the northeast from ...... Gomez. Sad but comical. Oh, I forgot Ayotte.

This is a silly election, but i wonder how many Latinos in Springfield will vote for him.

Markey’s already been in a long time. I was 2 when he was elected to Congress. He’s vulnerable in a primary and if he doesn’t go down there, his age will be his undoing. As for Gomez, he’s a Trojan Horse. We have far too many of those already.

The trick would be to slip a pro-lifer through... as a Democrat. After all, radical pro-aborts have been nominating the Republican candidates in MA for 3 decades+.

Gee, 20%? I'm sure they've all gotten the memo that Gomez is Colombian not Puerto Rican like them.

As for democrat primaries, to play devil's advocate, let them all be moonbats so reasonable people know they have no place in that party, cause they don't.

It would be interesting if we could get a pro-life RAT nominated under the radar in Massachuttes. Quite a few of them have held local offices there, as well as a Congressman or two. It's very doable if there's a 8 way primary race with 7 moonbats and a well known pro-life RAT running. Pennsylvania and Rhode Island have run pro-life RATs for statewide office against RINOs (Penn. also beat Santorum with fake pro-life RAT Bob Casey Jr.)

I now have a Casey Jr. type phony as my new state Senator. The first thing the "socially conservative" Chicago machine hack did was vote for gay marriage. At least my previous RAT state senator actually did vote reliably pro-life and anti-illegal, although he was worthless on everything else.

As for Gomez, it wouldn't surprise me if he voted AGAINST a Scalia-type SCOTUS judicial nominee in the future, like all the RINOs who voted against Bork for being "too extreme" (he's put on a press release saying it proves he's a "different kind of Republican"). I think Brown would probably do the right thing, but I don't trust Gomez. Kelly Ayotte would almost certainly vote the right way on a conservative SCOTUS judge, though she's stabbing us in the back on immigration now.

well, the multi-candidate DEM primary will soon be under way in Markey’s CD MA-5. Four state legislators and 1 sheriff running as progressive DEMS. Yes, even the sheriff is a progressive.

The anti-amnesty callers should all call the RNC and NRSC when Gomez loses and tell them it was because of amnesty.

Romney lost 99% of the black female vote and it wasnt about abortion.

Gomez has to vote liberal as well for 17 months. Scott Brown voted against amnesty.
