Republicans have talked about pursuing a different kind of candidate since what seems like forever. Heck, the national party even convened a special, secret task force just for that purpose late last year, after losing key demographic groups such as women and Hispanics.
Yet, given exactly the kind of candidate they hire people to find out in the hinterlands, Republicans are oddly not engaged with helping him cross the finish line in a special election that would significantly stun Democrats.
Gabriel Gomez is a Massachusetts Republican running to fill John Kerry's vacated U.S. Senate seat; the 47-year-old political newcomer is within striking distance of wounding Democrats right where it hurts.
Gomez, a first-generation American whose parents came here from Colombia, has a compelling life story that includes an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and service as a Navy SEAL and fighter pilot. He is Roman Catholic, personally pro-life; fluent in Spanish; a father of four who met his wife when he was deployed as a SEAL in Grenada, where she was a Peace Corps volunteer.
His opponent, Congressman Ed Markey
...
Democrats know they have a problem; privately, they worry about Markey's long, unremarkable Washington career. So they have called in the two best reinforcements they could think of: outside money and some speechifying by Barack Obama.
Meanwhile, on the Republican side, crickets meaning silence.

NOTE: I do not owe the Republican Party my vote. The Republican Party owes me candiates that I want to vote for. They are failing.
I’m in Massachusetts. Gomez is a nightmare. He can’t wait to vote with the Gang of 8 to open the borders. He might vote 25% of the time with the GOP. He’s NOT getting my vote.
I voted for Scott Brown cause he was againt Obamacare & amnesty & the GOP got his vote about 55% of the time....that I could live with. Gomez is a bridge too far.
The fact this election occurs in a state that just elected Elizabeth "The Liar" Warren over Scott Brown might have something to do with it. Brown's win in 2009 was a freak event.
Sounds like the usual RINO loser. This year they picked a Gomez, because Latino is the in thing. In other years, they might pick a woman. Or whatever is the current fashion.
Democrat lite. And not so very lite, either, usually.
Markey will win this one huge. No one’s going to be caught sleeping on the dems’ side this time.
From the ‘Globe’ 11 June, 2013:
“He appeared to be appealing to those voters tonight by supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act, which calls for equal pay for women; by calling himself a green Republican and saying that there are people in my party who deny science; and by saying that he was ashamed that only a handful of Republicans voted for the Toomey-Manchin bill, which would have expanded background checks for gun buyers. Gomez also said he supported an increase in the federal minimum wage to $10 and expressed support for gay marriage.”
That’s why. Oh, and he contributed to Il Douche. Twice.
No thanks.
The GOP is dead.
Let’s devote our efforts to getting the dead bodies out and replacing it with a party with measurable IQ.
I’ll not evah vote for a RINO...which means I’ll not vote for the vast majority of the GOP.
As I’ve said before, the only upside to a Gomez victory would be for the people of Massachusetts to get used to voting for republicans. Kennedy and Kerry had a stranglehold on the two senate seats. With them gone, the people have a chance. Scott Brown screwed us (and himself) over.
Gomez is better than Markey but not by much. The ideal situation would be for Gomez to beat Markey, then be primaried next year. Though our primaries are in September, which needs to be changed.
DemonRATS vote with their party. RINOS vote with the other party. Why bother?
Well put. "Republican" does not automagically mean Conservative.
A lot of dumba**es here who refused to live in the real world.. There is no way in hell that a Ted Cruz type of Candidate is going to win the Massachusetts.. Unless you all prefer to live in fantasy land and keep winning by losing.
We win we get a temporary “boast” against the democrats in national media, we win we also lose because he’s another RINO.
We lose we lose one vote, but we also win because he’s another RINO (who’ll stab us in the back in the Senate for who knows how long)?!
Right.
He’s a Dem in all but party ID
Brown won because some thought he might actually be a bit conservative under there, he wasn’t
How is voting for a leftist running as a Republican advancing the Conservative agenda, Kevin ? Gomez makes Scott Brown look like Jesse Helms.
And I'll be voting for him. It's still worth it to hand a defeat to Ed Malarkey.
Since finding myself in Markey's district, it will be my first ever vote to keep him in the House.
That Markey guy would be more your type then?
(since you will not vote for the GOP candidate Gomez)
I am sure all these anti-Gomez posters thought Akin & Mourdock were a cinch to win in red states. Since both were soundly defeated, only naive people must believe a Ted Cruz type would win in MA.
