Sports radio is the ultimate joke. Repetition is the key. Anyway, around the time of the NFL Draft a topic was whether Geno Smith was a victim of racism because as a black QB he wasn't drafted as high as expected. The white dude host sheepishly said “Maybe I am naive...” And then he said he hoped racism was a thing of the past. Somehow, I think Smith will be just fine financially. No need for the white boy to worry.

Survey Methods Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June 1-4, 2013, with a random sample of 1,529 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones and cellular phones, with interviews conducted in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 50% cellphone respondents and 50% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by region. Landline telephone numbers are chosen at random among listed telephone numbers. Cellphone numbers are selected using random digit dial methods. Landline respondents are chosen at random within each household on the basis of which member had the most recent birthday.

Samples are weighted to correct for unequal selection probability, nonresponse, and double coverage of landline and cell users in the two sampling frames. They are also weighted to match the national demographics of gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, population density, and phone status (cellphone only/landline only/both, cellphone mostly, and having an unlisted landline number). Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2012 Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older U.S. population. Phone status targets are based on the July-December 2011 National Health Interview Survey. Population density targets are based on the 2010 census. All reported margins of sampling error include the computed design effects for weighting.

A great deal of massaging went into the numbers, but I do not believe they controlled for literacy.

A long-awaited federal study finds that an estimated 32 million adults in the USA — about one in seven — are saddled with such low literacy skills that it would be tough for them to read anything more challenging than a children's picture book or to understand a medication's side effects listed on a pill bottle.

Makes you wonder about the survey results.

You have a wise son. I rarely watch the network. For news or highlights, the TV network is horrible and the radio outlet is bland and redundant. I think sports radio would be interesting if there was a mix of business, politics, stadium-arena management and sponsorship. It would be educational to hear about the arena situations with the Coyotes (NHL) possible move to Seattle, or the political battles with public funding of stadiums. But the discussion focuses on recapping last night's game and promting the next ESPN event. I particularly find the usage of “first-name” of certain athletes to be turnoffs: DANICA, TIGER (OK, a nickname), SERENA, KOBE, LEBRON, MANNY (when he was hip) among others. If ESPN was around when Jerry West played and Wilt Chamberlain played, would they get first-name status or are those too generic? Do they have meetings to promote athletes to this level?
