The evidence shows they are following the path of earlier immigrants.
As immigration reform moves through Congress, one claim by opponents is that this time immigration is different because the country's latest arrivals aren't assimilating. On the contrary, however, the evidence overwhelmingly shows that today's immigrants are acculturating and moving up the economic ladder like previous generations.
The media's tendency to report "averages" in educational attainment, English-language skills, income and other traditional measures of assimilation can make it difficult to determine whether immigrants are making gains. Since Latino immigration continues, averaging together the poverty rates or homeownership levels of large numbers of people who arrived recently with those who have been here for decades can provide a skewed view of progress.
Measuring assimilation properly requires following the same immigrants over generations. And the good news is that longitudinal studies that take this approach show that Latino immigrants have made gains similar to other groups who preceded them.

This report demonstrates otherwise but I have grave doubts on the veracity, legitimacy of what it purports to convey.
Call me a cynic but I believe there's a deeper more sinister point to the report and that is as a message to xenophobes that there's no need to feel threatened by the multitude of Hispanics entering the country illegally or even the need to build a boundary fence with Mexico to keep them out, because eventually as these fine, hard-working folks arrive, as generations past have done, legally or otherwise, in search of their own American dream, like previous generations have in fact been shedding their local ethnicity conforming to the American way of life, it's culture, like a snake shedding its skin for a brand new shiny one underneath.
So, I don't necessarily buy this demographic dream the left-wing liberals have concocted about the future and any need to worry about illegals overrunning the country or having to build a ridiculous, overly expensive fence we are ill-equipped to build financially, politically, anyway.
WSJ, are you kidding? You are right to doubt the veracity of this article.
I knew a Hispanic girl 25 years ago who told me that her dad would get angry whenever anyone in the house spoke Spanish. “You are Americans now, and you must speak English!”
I have the impression though that situation has changed light-years since I knew her.
Too bad there isn’t a wave of illegals waiting to take all the editorial jobs at the WSJ. They might have a different take on the blessings of illegal aliens.
Who wrote this? Paul Gigot? He’s been schilling for amnesty for at least ten years, since he took over the WSJ editorial page when Robert Bartley died.
The whole assumption is WRONG since previous legal “immigrants” got no benefits on the backs of taxpayers and had to swim or sink as they became US citizens with total loyalty to the US for giving them a chance to swim.
Most immigrants assimilate. So what? That is no argument for open borders or amnesty for tens of millions.
Michael Medvid had Gigot on yesterday. Medvid is about 10% as smart as he thinks he is.
Typical liberal Utopian line of attack: Everyone is the same, all people are equal. You think otherwise and you’re a racist.
America is not assimilating “Hispanics”, they are assimilating America. All you have to do is look around, they denigrate every aspect of American life, turning neighborhoods into Tijuana as fast as possible. Learn English? hell no! we are supposed to learn to speak Spanish! This is the major problem, they don’t want to be Americans (after all we stole Aztlan from them) they just want everything they can suck out of America!
WSJ has been running an incessant parade of left wing opinion pieces. And their hard news is totally skewed as well. It is the functional equivalent of the NY Slimes.
Want to know when we’ll know hispanics are assimilating into America?
When I make a phone call and I never, ever again hear:
“Press 1 for English...”
my experience shows they are not assimilating except for a small percentage...generally the better educated and informed illegals. the majority still want to go back Mexico after they fleece the USA.
Where will their petulant offspring invade after they turn America in the hellhole they escaped from? Invade and multiply appears to be their religion.
Same open borders BS, different decade.
WSJ hates 'nationalism' unless its 'Hispanic'.
Why don’t we just roll into mexico and take over the land near the border and see out they like it.
Mexico is absorbing the United States, already close to 10% of their population has physically relocated to here.
Then why do I have to “press 1 for English”?????
The schools and laws actively DISCOURAGE “assimilation”!!!
Any Christian that votes (d-rat) is a hypocrite.
Agree. It does not matter that many of the Hispanics show some signs of âassimilating.â What counts is the small dedicated minority that is âHell Bentâ on reconquest. La Raza comes to mind. I had a young Chicana lawyer tell me once “We are taking over here!” They are in California, Arizona Nevada and Texas the very states we obtained by way of the war with Mexico.
Are second and third generation "Hispanics" voting for Big Government??
WSJ doesn't address that aspect.
What the article does not address is the phenomenon of two Hispanics completely fluent in English but still reverting to Spanish when speaking with each other. En masse this can create Spanish speaking colonies despite the fact that the majority of them can speak English.
The whole assumption is WRONG since previous legal immigrants got no benefits on the backs of taxpayers and had to swim or sink as they became US citizens with total loyalty to the US for giving them a chance to swim.
Post of the month!
I’m surprised the smartest guy in the room still has a show.
He must have a big following in the ‘Moderate’ (read that too ashamed to admit their full blown Leftist) crowd.
“America is not assimilating Hispanics, they are assimilating America.”
Illegals are the issue, not Hispanic immigration, nor Hispanic cultures. It’s been my lifelong observation that by the 2nd and 3rd generations, Mexicans or Costa Ricans or whover are Americanized to the extent that Europeans were Americanized during the waves of immigration at the turn of the 20th century. We still have “Little Italy’s”, Jewish neighborhoods, and Chinatowns and we’ll have ‘Little Mexico’s”. That part is ok, it’s our American heritage.
In point of fact, “Hispanics” have always been part of Southern and Western American culture. New Orleans was once a spanish city, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and California.
That said, we must put 100% stop to illegals, make them apply like everyone else (i.e. enforce our laws). No general amnesty. English and naturalization is a requirement. We should expect that out of everyone who wants to come here.
Oath of Citizenship:
I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince ,potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have hertofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God. In acknowledgment whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
It is the American government that is the villan here.
Well it’s been my lifelong experience as a first generation American of immigrants, that things just are not the same as they used to be! Yes there have always been enclaves of Germans, Italians, Puerto Rican’s, Spaniards, whatever, the one biding agent was that they came here to be Americans, and they pushed their children to assimilate and learn the American Culture. They did not deny their children their heritage, nor should anyone ever deny their heritage, but they did want their children to become Americans!
Now we see things differently, I feel that there are still peoples wanting to come here to be Americans, but I feel
(and have dealt with many as either employer or co worker)the vast majority from our southern border have no intent whatsoever in shifting their allegiance. I am not saying that they are bad people, just the facts as I have experienced them.
You make fair points. The old melting pot isn’t what it used to be, is it? I believe it’s still working out there, just overwelmed. The government must begin controling the borders and enforcing our immigration laws.
I totally agree! Once we control our borders and control the timing of immigrants we will get a handle on the rest. Being the offspring of immigrants I have no animus against LEGAL immigrants who follow the rules and want to better themselves.
LOL. So true.
Do you think if we had waves of undocumented politicians willing to legislate over here for $6.00/hr we'd get a border fence built?
“This report demonstrates otherwise but I have grave doubts on the veracity, legitimacy of what it purports to convey.”
That report is a steaming crock of $%^#.
The WSJ is a stronghold of the Treason Lobby- their idiot former editor wanted a Constitutional Amendment stating “There Shall Be Open Borders”. And their current editor is just as bad.
They have no interest in telling the truth when it comes to immigration.
“Michael Medvid had Gigot on yesterday. Medvid is about 10% as smart as he thinks he is.”
You deserve a medal for being willing to listen to Medved. And Gigot for that matter.
I’d have to return the medal. I couldn’t listen to those two. I happened by the station and listened for a minute to see if Medvid was as ignorant as I remembered him being, and had my confirmation in moments.
“I happened by the station and listened for a minute to see if Medved was as ignorant as I remembered him being, and had my confirmation in moments.”
Michael Medved’s politics began on the hard left, to the point of working for Red Ron Dellums back in the day.
He moved to the center to support Reagan back in 1980 but in a lot of ways he’s returned to his natural affinity for things left- that’s certainly the case when it comes to amnesty and immigration.
His idea of a ‘conservative’ is Lindsey Graham, John McCain, basically all the usual suspects from the GOP elite.
Funny thing is, I think he actually thinks of himself as a moderate to right leaning individual. Your Graham/McCain mention is about it though isn’t it.
” I think he actually thinks of himself as a moderate to right leaning individual. “
I’m not so sure. I think he knows better, but poses as a conservative for several reasons.
For one, he makes a living pitching his work to conservatives. Alienating your target audience isn’t a smart move, although he manages to do that surprisingly often.
Another reason is that he tries to nudge conservatives to the left, to where he likes to be. This is a common tactic among the GOP elite and he fits right in with them.
But I think his primary reason is that he bitterly despises isolationism. He has said that Nixon’s rallying to Israel’s defense in 1973 made him rethink his commitment to the radical left and this is why he drifted away from the Democrats when the McGovernites took control.
He came out for Reagan in 1980 because of Reagan’s muscular foreign policy, but like many other neocons he still firmly embraces liberal social views. This is muted somewhat in Medved by his religious practice.
But despite his posturing I don’t think that it’s too hard to see through Medved. He’s definitely an influence peddler for the GOP moderates who want to marginalize conservative influence in the Party. I use him the vet up and coming candidates. If Medved is for them then I regard it as a warning flag- so it’s no surprise to find Rubio exposed as a fraud.
I agree with what you posted. Some of it I hadn’t heard before. I haven’t listened in to his show to learn quite as much as you have. It pains me to listen to a guy who doesn’t get it.
I’ve even had to turn Rush off a few times when he backed people or policies I couldn’t.
It is a good policy to listen to who people support, when you know they aren’t solid conservatives. It does help to vet people.
Typically, the first generation immigrants are very poor but are willing to work long hours at tedious or physically demanding jobs. One thing that they do not do, however, is encourage their children to obtain the education and skills in order to have higher-paying, higher-skill jobs. As a result, the kids are given the choice: do a dead end job like dad for minimum wage, live on welfare, or run in a gang and engage in crime. All too often, the children of Mexican immigrants choose options 2 or 3.
Culturally, I've noticed that the first and second generations opt out of both Mexican culture and mainstream American culture. They often speak barrio Spanglish instead of either Spanish or English, and act in ways that wouldn't be acceptable in either Mexico or the United States. A smaller subset (the Chicano activist types) prefer reverse assimilation, refusing to speak any English at all or take part in any aspect of American life.
