After weeks of growing expectations regarding a new stretched-out version of the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing (BA) officially launched the 787-10 program on Tuesday and announced United Continental (UAL) as the jet’s North American launch customer.

With orders raking in at this week’s Paris Air Show, the third and largest member of the 787 family has now received commitments for 102 airplanes worth roughly $30 billion at list price from five customers across Europe, Asia and the U.S.

I’m sure Boeing is offering huge discounts on the 787 to generate orders after the years long production delays and the battery issues.

That’s where the extra length comes from - they put the batteries in a much-extended rear compartment, where they won’t cause any problems if they burn.

I thought the size of the jet doesn’t matter?

I flew a Lot Airlines 787-8 from ORD to WAW last week and I was underwhelmed: A small 1C section forward (I think), 18 seats in BC, and two large coach sections 3x3x3 (no Economy Plus that I could see). I’m a UA 1K and best I could get was a bulkhead aisle seat center section in the second coach section. The lavs are loud and there’s no stopping people using your legroom as an aisle, even stretched out trying to sleep. At least I had more legroom than the folks behind me. The seat slides forward on recline so you don’t end up impinging on the person behind you, and the overhead compartments are much larger than other widebodies.

Yet another big gamble by the Big B. I’m not a fan of the 787 due to those radical wings being flexible so much.

Is it true that one in the air the engines shut down and the wings flap to carry it to its destination?

No. God! Where did you hear such a silly thing??

Passengers must bounce up and down to get those wings flapping. Jeez.

Well it’s clear you do not understand the latest technology. When the engines fail, peddles attached to a chain and sprocket put out from under the seat in front of each passenger, and they are instructed to put their backs into it, to keep the engine fans turning as fast as they can.

“...much-extended rear compartment...”

If that rear compartment gets any longer they can sell the plane to the Navy for anti-submarine warfare duty.
