Following a well-worn path to Germany's Brandenburg Gate, President Obama plans to invoke America's most important speakers at the Berlin landmark -- John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan -- as he seeks to revive his promise to curb climate change.
"Any time a U.S. president speaks in Berlin it's a powerful backdrop to our postwar history," said national security spokesman Ben Rhodes as the president arrived in Berlin Tuesday night. "This is a place U.S. presidents have gone to talk about the role of the free world, essentially, whether it's President Reagan or President Kennedy," he said, according to the pool report.
Quoting Rhodes, the pool report said, "The overarching point he is going to make is that the same level of citizen and national activism" that was in the Kennedy speech must be applied to today's challenges of nuclear arms control and climate change.
"Obama will also talk about his five years in office and the foreign policy changes that have been made -- and a 'new, broader agenda of issues' (again naming nonproliferation and climate change)," said the report. Obama made climate change a top agenda item for his second term but has come under fire from environmentalists for not following through.
. Other details: Germany invited Obama to use the Brandenburg Gate. He will face east when giving the speech Wednesday. The audience will be a mix of German officials, locals and university students.
Comparing himself to Reagan and JFK comes as Obama is being compared back home to other, less inspirational presidents. Critics of the IRS scandal, for example, have compared Obama to Richard Nixon, and liberals upset with the National Security Agency snooping probe liken him to George W. Bush.
In his speech, JFK famously called himself "ein Berliner," while Reagan called on the former Soviet Union to "tear down" the Berlin Wall that separated the democratic West from Communist East Germany. Neither mentioned climate change or global warming.
TEAR DOWN THIS MALL!
He might as well invoke Mohammed and Saul Alinsky and the pigs in Animal Farm while he’s at it.
The audience will be a mix of German officials, locals and university students.
any of them speak English ,I bet they’ll have their Booooooo removed
What’s he going to say; “Ich bin ein illegal-alien Muslim!”, or “Mr. Low-information Voter, tear down this Western Civilization!”?
Pray for Snow!
Which side of the gate is he going to be speaking on?
facing East of course...
The east side overlooking Karl Marx blvd I presume.
I have a serious question about East and West Berlin and the wall.
The reason I bring this up is that I think there are a lot of people that may not understand this.
Was West Berlin “Completely” surrounded by East Germany ?
Basically, could you drive or take a train to West Berlin when the wall us up ?
So, when both Kennedy and Reagan went to the Brandenburg gate, they flew over East Germany ?
I’ve tried to research this but it never seems very clear.
Pure insanity or else just lying. The whole global warming thing is crashing down and he is going around desperately trying to screw our economy in any event.
yellow snow .....
There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the
Communist Islamic world. Let them come to Berlin.
There are some who say that
Communism Islam is the wave of the future. Let them come to Berlin.
And there are some who say in Europe and elsewhere we can work with the
Communists Muslim Brotherhood. Let them come to Berlin.
And there are even a few who say that it is true that
Communism Islam is an evil system, but it permits us to make economic progress. Lass' sie nach Berlin kommen. Let them come to Berlin.
Yes, Berlin was an island isolated inside East Germany. However, the Berlin airlift was mounted when the communists embargoes the city by land and we had to resupply everything by air. So I guess in other times there were land deliveries into West Berlin.
However you could not just drive across East Germany into West Berlin. East and West Germany were separated by an armed border and I believe by a wall in many places.
Hes got to kow tow to the libbies who were promised climate change...
Then, how were those 'land deliveries' delivered? In fact, there was a highway from West Germany into West Berlin that passed through East Germany.
Reagan spoke for freedom.. Obama speaks for wind mills.
That’s what I thought and it seems through modern history paints the line between east and west running through Berlin.
So much attention has been put on the efforts to “escape from the east” into west Berlin, which admittedly had better conditions, but was still surrounded by East Germany.
Why not just go around the city ?
Only the Helmstedt Autobahn was available for American forces to travel over eastern GE to Berlin.
I wondered how American tanks found their way into West Berlin.
Ich bin ein Hamburger!
Ich bin ein Frankfurter!
Ich bin ein Wiener!
Yeah... When I was assigned in Stuttgart, by the time I made it to Berlin, the wall had fallen, but I did get some chunks of it.
One of the more interesting trips I made was on summer of 1990, when I went to the first volksmarsch in East Germany. It was located in the village of Graefenau, near Erfurt. I crossed into the eastern zone and I felt like I’d traveled back through a time warp to 50 years prior. The infrastructure was similar in design, but delapidated.
The only thing our current Imbecile-in-Chief has with either JFK or Reagan is....
...sorry, can’t think of a single thing.
I hope the Germans run his goat smellin’ @$$ off. He’s no JFK or Ronald Reagan.
Is it just me or were the logistics of even the existence of a West Berlin mind boggling ?
In addition to the politics and Military issues ?
As I said earlier, I think a lot of people think West Berlin was connected to the west.
Ich bin ein dummkopf!
