Conservatives need to understand that the country clubby cigars-and-cocktails Rockefeller wing of the GOP was NEVER in their camp, AND NEVER WILL BE. Not now; NOT EVER. They don't think like YOU do — HEll, they may not even like you — even if they CAN play golf, and share your taste in fine Scotch.
Conservatives need to GET OVER THEIR ERRANT TRYST WITH THE GOP; the GOP has certainly moved on.
But we have nowhere to move to.
While I agree wholeheartedly with everything that you said, I don’t see a solution anywhere in there. I am finished voting reflexively for Republicans, simply because many of them are as much of the problem as Democrats. It isn’t a question of “ideological purity” as many of the vote-GOP claim. It is a more practical matter. Voting for the GOP, as it is currently comprised, is a vote for the continued decay of the American economy and culture. The Democrats, and most of the Republicans, are leading us in the exact same direction.
So this leaves the obvious, as yet unanswered, question: what path remains to arrest this slide? Sometimes, wisdom dictates the recognition that there is no solution. That things will go the way they will, and the only recourse is to be ready when opportunity shows itself. I believe this is one of those times.
I will support fully any true conservative, and oppose fully any other. But I am under no illusion that this will do any good, barring a miraculous change in the psyche of the majority of the American people.
