An Egyptian misdemeanors court has issued an 11 year prison sentence to Islamist preacher Ahmed Abdullah (AKA Abu Islam) on charges of insulting religion and burning the Bible.

Abu Islam, who is the head of two Islamic satellite TV channels – the Umma and Mariya – has also been fined LE3000, but the verdict will be suspended pending appeal.

The court also sentenced Islam, Abu-Islam's son, to eight years in prison and fined him LE 2000 for taking part in burning the Bible with his father. This sentence is also suspended pending appeal.

During an 11 September 2012 demonstration in front the US embassy in Cairo protesting the anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims," the Muslim cleric publicly burned copies of the Bible. Before leaving the demonstration, he told the crowd that he would later send his grandson to urinate on the Bible.

Last week, Amnesty International expressed concern over the increasing number of charges for blasphemy and insulting religion in Egypt.

Amnesty stated that the majority of those targeted by such accusations in Egypt are Coptic Christians.

In February 2013, the prosecutor general ordered Abu Islam's arrest for allegedly insulting Christianity.

They don’t get it and neither do our leaders, we don’t need them to prevent any “insult”. The only thing they need to do is prosecute/prevent crime in the name of a religion.

As a Christian I have trouble getting upset about people who choose to burn bibles. Yes the message contained in the bible is sacred but in the physical sense it is just a book. If we venerate, or raise to holy levels, a mere book instead of the message don’t we risk creating a false idol or graven image? We are told to worship no one or no thing other than God himself.

Thank you! Every decade or so I have a lucid thought.

Strangely to us in the West, burning a Bible is actually considered blasphemous in Islamic countries.

Yeah, me too. It actually should get a bigger rise out of me, because I know that the Book they are destroying is a Light that can lead them from a very dark place, whose wide and broad highway leads to everlasting damnation, to a place of eternal peace and joy. Kind of like someone in a dry and thirsty land dumping the contents of the cold water in his canteen out on the ground. He's harming himself.
Like I said, I should get a bigger rise out of it, but I have to work on my hardened heart because it barely registers a shrug of the shoulders and a shake of the head. Every soul is precious, and it does register, but just a little...
