I visited there last spring.
I noticed a multiplicity of men in $1000 suits and women with $400 dresses, handbags, and shoes.
Life IS very good in the beltway.
OTOH my cousin who lives in Georgetown paid $800,000 for a home that would be $60,000 here in Indianapolis.
The business of Government is booming.
It costs a lot to live in some parts of DC.
Mostly west of the park, but urban pioneers—Whites, are moving back in and driving the shadow out into PG county.

I was there in March. Money is literally bubbling up thru cracks in the sidewalks.

I saw a flash mob of “Baraq’s Kids” strip a beverage truck clean in about 2 minutes right down the street from the Verizon Center and about 2 minutes later there must have been a hundred LEOs show up.

I was there in April. Hotel across the river from Georgetown.
From our balcony I could see 5 highrise cranes on tall buildings, lots of construction.
Many expensive cars w/ Obama bumper stickers. Strange, but I guess they know who butters their toast.
Government contracting is huge here.
I am lucky that since sequestration has put some pressure on gov’t contractors to reduce prices, the costs of my services have gone up, in particular for defense contractors.
Name any acronym defense contractor inside the beltway, and I have an agreement with them this summer courtesy of the tax payer.

To be honest though, the “boom” now is not even close to what we saw in the mid 2000s, with housing prices doubling each year from 2002-2006 and defense spending growing at double digit rates each year.
People were minting money during those 4 years
I would bet there were no arrests made though.
Washington DC is surrounded. Where will it get food when the highways are shut down?
Just because someone pays something in the DC area does not mean there's any 'wealth' underlying the price.
From the bunkers we paid for with Iran Contra money? Or Aghani poppies? Lord knows...
