Monsanto Executive Is Among World Food Prize Winners
The New York Times ^ | June 19, 2013 | ANDREW POLLACK

For the first time in its 27-year history, a prestigious award for enhancing the global food supply has gone to a creator of genetically modified crops, a top scientist at Monsanto. The choice is likely to add more heat to an intense debate about the role biotechnology can play in combating world hunger. Robert T. Fraley, Monsanto’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, will share the $250,000 World Food Prize with two other scientists who helped devise how to insert foreign genes into plants: Marc Van Montagu of Belgium and Mary-Dell Chilton of the United States.

The announcement was made in Washington on Wednesday, accompanied by a speech from Secretary of State John Kerry.

The prize was started in 1987 by Norman E. Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for bringing about the Green Revolution, which vastly increased grain output, and who thought there should be a Nobel Prize for agriculture. The award is given to those who improve the “quality, quantity or availability” of food in the world.

Monsanto Executive Is Among World Food Prize Winners

If Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize, then this fellow can win a 'food' prize.

It is entirely possible that Monsanto corporately has done more for the global good supply than anyone since Borlaug. I suspect in a rational world they would and should be celebrated for this.

Don't want them in your food, don't spray them on your crops.

That's the nice thing about GMOs, they reduce the need for nasty chemicals.

It is entirely possible that Monsanto corporately has done more for the global good supply than anyone since Borlaug.

True that. Borlaug was a big fan of Monsanto, and many of the people running the massive and pre-eminent R&D at Monsanto today are Borlaug acolytes. Without Borlaug's unique ability for turning theory into practice, and for inspiring others to focus on science that was aimed at solving real problems - not academic and irrelevant problems - there would be a lot more people starving in the world today.

The assorted and sundry Luddites, and scientific illiterates here, who howl, whine and moan about things they don't understand, are oblivious to the fact that when they condemn the work of Monsanto, they are also condemning the life's work of Norman Borlaug - a humble American who saved more lives than any other human who has ever lived.

Without the biotechnology of Beachell and Borlaug, the Green Revolution would not have happened, and a billion less people, or more, would not be alive today because their ancestors would have starved to death as infants or young children.

or special laws to protect them from their own negligence.

You have to be able to prove negligence, but proof is just another inconvenience to scientific illiterates like you.

It's a shame we don't have special laws to protect us from your ignorance.

The exact same FReepers show up on every single thread to defend Monsanto. I actually think that they work for them. There can be no reason why a conservative would support global food supply control and giving billions of our tax dollars to a company. It’s frightening to know the level that Monsanto will go to!

It is. There once was a time when being Conservative meant being an informed skeptic. Now it often just means stupid knee jerk negativity.

If you actually believe that then I as a duly qualified and licensed psychologist tell you that you may be suffering from a serious paranoid delusional disorder. This is no shit. You are very possibly a sick person. I would encourage you to seek professional evaluation at once. Unless you are just BSing for the helluvit.

Go Monsanto. Fed my family for 30y.

Want to cut back on top soil erosion, we’ve got a solution.

Want to cut back on chemical application, we’ve got a solution.

Want to reduce land and feed for milk producing livestock, we’ve got a solution.

What ya got, luddites?

Oh go back to your roost buzzard. Yeah, I’m a 5’ 10” supermodel with a natural honey complexion and bee stung lips. My boobs are real too. See? We’re all so much cooler online. Someone should write a song about that! Maybe Brad Paisley could sing it.
By the way, I noticed you have no defense for their receiving tax dollars. Hmm.
