Should California tell farmers throughout the country how to run their farms? Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, says no.
"It's exactly what our founding fathers wanted to avoid," King said.
But the rural-state lawmaker is concerned over California's strict laws on egg producers and other farmers as a result of Proposition 2, a ballot initiative passed by voters in 2008. The law requires egg producers to increase their cage size to more than 200 square inches, more than triple the industry recommendation. As a result, farmers from other states must comply with California hen cage standards if they wish to sell their product in the Golden State.
If they don't comply, they can't do business there.
But not if King has his way. He's proposed an amendment to the pending farm bill in Congress which would allow farmers in other states to sell eggs in California without having to comply with the state's law.

Okay, so they can cross state lines with the product - they just can’t sell them.
According to the SCOTUS, everything is now interstate commerce. The libs can’t have it both ways.
They are saying to farmers in other states that you must comply with our regulations if you want to be able to ship your product to our state for sale.
That is interstate commerce.
Everything is interstate commerce when the feds want to do it, according to our New Deal eta precedents.
But this is about one state regulating their internal markets. Their rules might be stupid, but perfectly within the power of a state.
I agree. The Founding States made the Commerce Clause (Constitution's Article I, Section 8, Clause 3) to give Congress the power to referee interstate trade disputes.
It's also not suprising that this Constitution-ignoring state legislation is coming from California. CA legislators are possibly unaware of the Commerce Clause as opposed to deliberately ignoring it.
State lawmakers in all states have also probably forgotten that their predecessors gave up the unique control of the federal Senate by state lawmakers as a consequence of ratifying the 17th Amendment.
The 200 pound chicken or the 200 pound egg?
I am just a bit torn on this issue. I believe that keeping chickens couped up in cages 24/7 and kept in the dark to increase egg production is cruel. If we are going to kill or use animals for the benefit of mankind, we should ensure that those animals are treated humanely.
I’m more than willing to pay double for free range or cage free eggs.
I think California’s position on this is a good position. If people want to sell their eggs in California, they should be required to abide by the same humanitarian laws and animal health laws that California farmers are required to live under.
I pay about $1.51 per dozen by buying them in a 20 pack for large, but like most things in California, you can pay a fortune if you want to go with organic, and brown, and so on, it is like the milk, I can buy at $2.50 and $2.79 per gallon, while seeing milk at $5.50 for a half gallon of organic milk.
Actually you can buy “free range” eggs for just a little more than the factory produced ones. They taste better.
So does the Constitution. Preventing interstate trade barriers was the original purpose for the Commerce Clause.
Meanwhile Calipornia unloads Billions of dollars worth of products at their harbors then sells and ships them from turd world countries built with. child labor under horrific conditions for pennies.
