Paula Deen has been called for a deposition in connection with a lawsuit filed by a former employee at the Savannah, Georgia restaurant she co-owns with her brother Earl "Bubba" Hiers. The celebrity chef, 66, was questioned about her alleged use of racial slur and jokes.

I don’t think anyone should be using the term, but if Blacks want to I’m not going to take them to task for it. I think it’s idiotic, but what the hey. They’re not using in the pejorative sense, putting each other down or denigrating each other by doing it. I just think it’s a word I’d never use.
When Whites use it, it is different. We may not like facing that, but it is.
That Deen would actually use this term completely destroys any respect I could have for the woman. The word is so racially charged, and the use is so offensive, it conveys an unacceptable mindset when a person uses it.
Too bad she didn’t use the word “retard”. She would have been given a pass.
It would be funny if she said, “Yes, as is true with many Americans, regardless of race, I said the word “ni@@er”, which is protected by the first ammendment.

I have to admit to using it, but only as a reference to BEHAVIOR and/or ATTITUDE. It is applying the same standard under which I'd call someone white trash.

I used to agree with your line of thought, but putting hate crimes on the books changes the game. Now, to keep up with these idiotic laws, it should be equally evil for all to use the term.
