Heritage, Levin Call for Immigration Debate
The American Spectator ^ | 6/20/13 | Jeffrey Lord

Posted on 06/20/2013 7:28:19 AM PDT by Lakeshark

Paul Ryan issued a challenge.

The Heritage Foundation picked up the challenge.

Mark Levin wants to see this debate as well.

It’s time — past time — for a full and open discussion in the conservative family about immigration. To stop with the sound bite presentations. To put an immediate stop to the idea of comprehensive immigration bills zipping through Congress with all the usual backdoor wheeling and dealing.

It’s time for a William F. Buckley-esque debate between conservatives that finally and quite publicly puts those involved with the issue together on one stage at the same time. Puts them there for an open, televised, candid, and serious discussion of a seriously momentous issue for the future of America. An issue that is being shoved through Congress with all the speed of a rocket accompanied by the usual Washington bipartisan game playing and theatrics.

The Heritage Foundation is precisely the right venue for this.

The participants? Levin suggests Heather Mac Donald, Ed Meese, and either or both Ted Cruz and Jeff Sessions for one side.

Side two? Levin suggests former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Congressman Paul Ryan, Governor Chris Christie. I would add Senator Marco Rubio.
**snip**
What part of “secure the border first” do these people not understand?

Does anyone really believe Republican members of the House have read their own bill? Much less the Senate bill?

Long, great article worthy of reading, and a great challenge by Heritage and Levin. We need to demand this of Ryan and Rubio. The bill would be dropped in its tracks if there was an actual debate. I would pay to watch it.

Sen. Sessions asked a great question, that wasn't answered. If it can't be answered, then the whole bill should be scrapped.

The question?

What does this bill do FOR America?

Makes the point perfectly. Well done!

What does this bill do FOR America?

Yesterday on Rush, Cruz simply said:

The bill WON'T solve any of the problems it claims to, it will only do bad things. It will cost a lot of money from the treasury, steal jobs from Americans, give unbelievable benefits to millions that don't deserve it, and will NOT STOP illegals from coming in.

I mean, what could go possibly wrong?

:-)

We need an ad to come against the one they’ve been playing for well over a month on talk radio. I want to bash my radio with a hammer every time I hear Rubio and Ryan talking about how we need this bill. My wife is being very patient with me about this......:-)

Some questions I would like to see answered:

1. If the current situation is so problematic that we must drop everything and legalize the illegals here now, then why don't we build the fence to keep this problem from recurring?

2. What are that chances that illegal border crossers will be in the 53% of net taxpayers and not in the 47% of benefit takers? Will they truly contribute more and take less than the average American?

And, WHY do they want to fast track this? IMHO, to ensure a democRAT landslide in 2014.

I am sick to my stomach about this crap.

Expanded, what is the purpose of federal immigration law?
Setting aside the truism that the ability to control one’s own borders is a salient attribute of national sovereignty,
I contend that the purpose is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people. The American people.
The government’s prime function is to use the powers delegated to it to secure the lives, liberty and happiness—of Americans.
Are they doing their jobs? The answer is a resounding ‘No.’

That debate has long been settled.

Americans have voted for parties that have done nothing to stop the flow of illegal aliens. Americans put tribe above country.

RE :”Ryan wants to balance the budget ten years down the road NOT......I don’t think he’s conservative to begin with and as for talk show hosts they end being the RINOstream media supporting the business as usual GOP-E politicians”

That's not the most phony part of it.

The worst part about Ryan and why I flagged him as a phony over two years ago is he :

1) Supported GWB expansion of current (2004) medicare benefits all on that-nation credit card/

paired with with

2) Ryan : We dont have to do anything to medicare now, need no cuts to it now, its just fine, but we must start cutting it in 10 years, but pass that into law now to get credit for it w no blame, OR it will go bankrupt in 10 years from now if we dont cut it 10 years from now.

If you dont have to do anything for the next 10 years, then congress of ~ 2023 should pass the 2023 cuts, not congress of 2013.

I was amazed that so many here fell for that scam.

If Ryan proposed immigration as he proposes Federal budgeting it would be :

we give them all US citizenship and standard government freebee now, and then start building ‘the fence’ in 10 years, because in 10 years illegal immigration will wreck this country, but we need them as workers now, so no immigrant outside US (today wink-wink) will be affected by the wall.

you think the same fools who agreed with the first (budgeting 10 years from now ) would buy the second (immigration) samelogic??

I wish that I could share your confidence in the Heritage Foundation, at this point. Frankly, after considering their behavior in the Jason Richwine Incident, I simply cannot.

We need to have a debate in which no relevant subject is taboo; otherwise, we surrender essential arguments to the foes of American continuity. And this is all about American continuity.

"2. What are that chances that illegal border crossers will be in the 53% of net taxpayers and not in the 47% of benefit takers? Will they truly contribute more and take less than the average American?"

Your point is apt, but still misses the still more essential point. Whether or not the interlopers turn out to be taxpayers, there is a dilution effect in adding their numbers to the resident population on a permanent basis. The reality is that every domain on earth is limited by its size & resources. There is a hidden price paid in increasing the population within a given area. The ultimate question is to what extent you want to preserve your space & resources for your rooted population. This was not really a critical question until the frontier was closed about a century ago; but it has been a critical question ever since.

There is also the question of what sort of immigrants you want to accept, up to whatever is determined to be an acceptable limit. (See my post #14.)
