Immigration reformers embrace once-unthinkable expansion of border personnnel
The Washington Examiner ^ | June 20, 2013 | Byron York

On June 12, Republican Sens. John Cornyn and John McCain, along with Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer, got into an argument that was pretty heated, at least by the standards of the Senate floor. The subject of their debate was an amendment proposed by Cornyn to strengthen the border security provisions in the Gang of Eight comprehensive immigration reform bill.

Among other measures, Cornyn proposed adding 5,000 new border patrol agents, along with 5,000 new customs officers, for a total of 10,000 new security positions. The Gang of Eight bill would add no new Border Patrol agents at all, and 3,500 Customs officers, meaning Cornyn was suggesting creating 6,500 positions above and beyond the Gang bill.

That was too much for McCain and Schumer, both Gang members. "If you are adding either additional border patrol or customs agents ... where does your money come from?" McCain asked Cornyn. "We are talking about personnel costs that are incredibly expensive."

So imagine Cornyn's surprise when, eight days later, McCain and Schumer took to the Senate floor to celebrate a new plan that would add not 5,000, not 10,000, but 20,000 new border patrol agents on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The plan was part of a new amendment, authored by Republican Sens. John Hoeven and Bob Corker, that sought to strengthen the Gang of Eight's security plan in a way that could win both parties' support. "The idea that broke the logjam is the border surge," Schumer said. Adding 20,000 new border patrol agents, he declared, is an idea "breathtaking in its size and scope."

Cornyn stood nearby, incredulous.

Shameless and an insult to the "intelligence" of the American people.

I know, I know.

What good does expansion of the Patrol do when their hands are tied to keep border hoppers from coming across the border and giving our guys a one finger salute?

All lies, just like in 2007. Expect them to quickly defund the new border agents just like they did with the fence in 2007.

Oh they will be busy. Building camp fires and handing out water to the Invading Hoards...

These people are disgusting.

"Farce" is right.

5,000, 10,000, 20,000 new border personnel?.....what difference does it make?

They'll all end up, along with addtional voters in their families, as another PATRONAGE army for the Demonrat Party (which is going to end up as the ONLY party after amnesty).

If anyone thinks different, please explain WHY.

Timber Rattler ~:” Expect them to quickly defund the new border agents just like they did with the fence in 2007.”

(from the article): “So imagine Cornyn’s surprise when, eight days later, McCain and Schumer took to the Senate floor to celebrate a new plan that would add not 5,000, not 10,000, but 20,000 new border patrol agents on the U.S.-Mexico border. “

They won’t defund the money for the additional staff
They will do the same thing that Kay Bailey Hutchinson (RHINO / R, Tex. ) did years ago ..
They will re-allocate the money elsewhere to further the administration’s socialist agenda.
Already , the administration has prosecuted 2 Border Agents for “violating the civil rights” of two drug smugglers.
There are already new ‘Rules of Engagement’ for Border Agents which prevent agents from performing their duty.
I imagine the new border agents will be used to keep citizens in , rather than keep immigrants out !

As with all previous legislation proposed by Schumer in the past , .. “FOLLOW THE MONEY ! “

700 miles of double fencing were authorized in 2006, but never built. Then almost 1,000 new BP agents were authorized during that same timeframe, but never hired.

Who believes Obama would hire and effectively deploy thousands of new BP agents? This is just more lies and ruses from many of the same con men who said about the same thing in 1986, and several more times since.

Laaura Ingraham on O’Rielly last night said the agents would be paid for by an accounting trick that would never occur—like using the money saved by cutting the deficit or some such.

These agents will be ghost agents. Never hired

Why? They’re just gonna sit around in offices shuffling paper until they qualify for a pension. Will pay lots of union dues to fund the Democrat Party in the meanwhile.

This is definitely caveat emptor. At this point I wouldn’t buy this lemon from them if they threw in clear-coat, undercoating, floor mats and an eight-track player.
And a Herb Albert 8 track tape.

They embraced that 30 years ago too. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Yep and I watched it first hand. When they pushed for the first immigration reform every year they would include 1,000 new Border Patrol Agents in the budget, them they would never fund them. They could them go back to their districts and claim they supported strong border enforcement.

When I joined the BP in 1985 we had 2,300 agents to cover the entire US. Today they have 21,000 agents and they don't catch any more aliens than we did back then.

Additionally, this "border trigger" nonsense of 90% apprehension rate is a complete joke. You can't count what you don't see and apprehend. Anyone who says they can estimate the number of aliens who were not apprehended during a given time is lying or just pulling numbers out of their butt. There is no way to verify such a stat.

20,000 more agents (in the unlikely event they actually fund them) will achieve nothing so long as illegal aliens can still get jobs. Congress knows this because they have done this before. This is all a scam.

During the 1986 immigration reform when it appeared that the US was going to actually enforce employer sanctions apprehensions dried up fast. Only after it became apparent that the government was not enforcing the law did the apprehensions began to steadily increase. Until E-Verify is implemented nation wide this is all just a big joke on us.
