Astonishing Vietnam War photos reveal the moment U.S. troops unleashed hell

A Vietnam War veteran has released incredible night-time photographs he took of American troops opening fire on a Viet Cong sniper who had been firing on a U.S. Army camp. For more than four decades, photographer James Speed Hensinger kept these incredible photographs to himself, not releasing them to the public until now. Hensinger was just a 22-year-old paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in April 1970 when a Viet Cong sniper began spraying automatic rifle fire on Hensinger's base in Phu Tai, near the coastal city of Da Nang.

It is a massive expanded view of the single Marine to Company night-fire demo with tracers they gave us in infantry training at about the same time this was going on.

The point that was made at the time was that if the NVA were charging this wall of fire, a lot of them would make it through.

...and probably didn't hit a damned thing. That sniper popped up out of his hole, fired off his clip and ducked back down in there before these guys could get off their first shot.

Sure made for a heck of a lightshow though. And just think: those tracers are every fifth round. A lot o' lead flyin' around.

Those are spectacular photos, but tragic ones. Thanks for posting them.

We lost that war. I was there when Saigon was evacuated, our tails between our legs.

Pyrotechnics don’t win wars. Technology doesn’t win wars. Body counts don’t win wars. Winning battles doesn’t even win wars.

We won WWII - none since. We’re losing our current one(s). That’s the jist of it.

A little hosing by Spooky would work wonders in that situation.

Sniper? Spraying automatic weapons fire? Uh, kinda defeats the purpose of sniping I would think. Guess they missed the part about 1 shot, 1 kill, slink away.

“We won WWII - none since. “

First, thank you for service. But I think you, like others here, are too cynical on this issue. We no more lost the Korean War than the War of 1812, both of which simply ensured the status quo ante. Most wars do not end with unconditional surrender and occupation of the enemy's nation like WWII.

I would go so far as to say we did not lose Vietnam. In that case, Democrats in the government made a conscious decision to abandon an ally after the preservation of the allied regime was secured by hard fought efforts of the armed forces.

You did not lose that war. The Democrats conspired with their communist allies and they betrayed us and you.

Beware the enemy within.

I was there too, ‘66-67’ when US troop morale was still high. Unfortunately,I’m convinced that, as what happened in ‘Nam will repeat in Afghanistan.

The NVA and the VC were driven by their ideology and dedication to their cause and defeated a US backed military that was led by corrupt officers and a corrupt government.

I see a repeat of this in Afghanistan.

Sad but true

We fought in Nam to prevent the spread of communism and those of us that returned lived to see the people and the country we fought for implement it here...... voluntarily.

Men win war. From the politician down to the rifleman.

We must remember never to get involved in a war unless we choose to win it.

Even WW2 ended on a sour note. The War in Europe started when England and France promised Poland itwould be free. All that happened was we handed them and the Eastern European countries over to Stalin. In the Pacific, half of Korea amd China went from Japanese control to Communists.

Actually despite our best efforts to lose the war the US and SVN won. NV broke the peace accords in 72, and were sent back north badly hurt.

Democrats cut off virtually all military aid and gave the go ahead to take SVN.

Sorta like what commander zero is doing in Afcrapistan and Iraq. Surrender after victory.

From the article:

“Hensinger says: ‘We sent out patrols during the day, and found a blood trail one morning. Otherwise, we never found him. ‘The rocks on the slope were as big as Volkswagens. It took a very stupid officer to put a pin in the map and say, “Build it here.”’
