The Cap'n , who noticed the uniform he wears on cereal boxes had the stripes of a commander, not a captain. That is: A captain has four stripes on his sleeve, while a commander has three. 1. Cartoon character
2. Not a USN uniform
3. Captain is both formal and positional. An Ensign in charge of a ship is the captain, although the Captain on the dock is a Captain, but not the captain.
4. NPR must not have gotten any Lefty faxes today, so they had to research the cereal box.
