Exclusive: Hastings Sent Colleagues Email Hours Before Crash (WOW)
KTLA ^ | June 21, 2013

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — The crash that killed journalist Michael Hastings was ruled an accident by police, but conspiracy theories continued to circulate on Friday.

Hastings, 33, was killed in a fiery solo-vehicle crash in Hancock Park early Tuesday morning.

...Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs told KTLA that he received an email from Hastings on Monday.

Biggs had known Hastings since 2008, when the journalist was embedded in his unit in Afghanistan.

“On Monday morning, I woke up and I got an email, and it’s very panicked,” Biggs said.

He was blind-copied on the email, which was sent to Hastings’ colleagues.

In part, it said that the feds were interviewing his close friends and associates, and that he was onto a big story and needed to get off the radar.

The FBI has denied that Hastings was ever under investigation.

“It alarmed me very much,” Biggs said. “I just said it doesn’t seem like him. I don’t know, I just had this gut feeling and it just really bothered me,” he said.

The email was sent just before 1 p.m. on Monday, 15 hours before the deadly crash.

Breaking news photographer Scott Lane happened to be less than a mile from the scene of the crash, and shot video of the fiery aftermath.

Video taken from his car’s dashcam also caught what appeared to be Hastings’ Mercedes minutes before the crash, speeding through a red light.

More than 30 seconds pass after Hastings’ car goes by, and no other cars pass through the intersection.

“There’s no cars that are following him,” Lane said. “He flies by and 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds goes by… No cars are following him.”

Also: I am on a big story, and need to go off the radar a bit

Evidently that message was intercepted and he was accommodated.

I know. By “Brietbarted?” I mean “Was he Brietbarted?”. Unfortunately the post that landed right before mine mentioned Brietbarted and made it look like I didn’t know what Brietbarted meant.

What are the odds that a vehicle speeding thru a red light would eventually end up in an accident....

Or a group in a position to pretend to be the FBI was intimidating him.

Now who would know enough and be confident of not being prosecuted for masquerading as FBI?

This sounds like maybe he suffered Sudden Hunter Thompson Syndrome.

I knew a city bus driver who was as grounded as could be in conversation and on the job. He never drank during the work week but put away a bottle of Hennessy on his days off. Did that for at least 10 years. One night he wakes up and his neighbors are yelling insulting things at him from their houses. Except they weren't. They put him on a 55 gallon drum of Risperdal and eventually brought him down with advice to lay off the sauce. Don't know whether he got dibbed out or a desk job. Be interesting to know if Hastings drank a lot.

BS. These cars especially top end model’s computers automatically cut off the fuel in crashes. This car look like it EXPLODED on impact. In the video the metal looks like its melting in places.

Going off radar / disappearing. Faking own death. Have they done DNA tests on the body?

We’re FBI fake? FBI said they weren’t investigating. Who was?

Based on what I learned while handling a car burning case many years ago—the odds are almost zero. For that case I interviewed a number of arson experts, auto industry experts, insurance industry experts, etc.

Yep. Hastings was murder death killed. By drone or by bomb, or a combination of incendiary device + accelerator manipulation.

People see car burning in crash and don’t think twice, because they see it in fiction all the time.

This was a 2012/2013 Mercedes C250 Coupe, entry-level model a little over $40K. A V6 Honda Accord is faster.

The C250 is a prestige badge for cheap, as evidenced by so many FReepers who think it must be way more expensive than a Buick Lacrosse.

I think he’s been I’d by dental.

I don’t know if I trust the FBI to tell the truth anymore.

There are 55 onboard computers on late model Lexus cars. Mercedes is probably similar. The Techstream factory computer interface can do all kinds of stuff. Including ABS/VSC and throttle.

I believe a device connected to the CAN bus and hidden under the dash could be used to remotely do most anything.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about cars that are not Toyota/Lexus. I have been a Toyota specialist for 32 years.
