Former Alabama star back Glen Coffee will graduate from U.S. Army Airborne School

Not many players walk away from football as abruptly as Glen Coffee did.

The former Alabama star running back played a season with the 49ers and even started two games. Then the former third-round pick simply told the team he was done with football during training camp before what would have been his second season, in 2010.

Most football players will stay in the NFL until they're told they can no longer come back, but Coffee admitted he just didn't like football anymore. And it turns out, he had bigger goals.

AL.com reported Coffee enlisted in the U.S. Army in February, and completed five jumps out of a plane and will graduate from the Airborne School at Fort Benning in Georgia. He wants to go to Fort Bragg and become a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces.

If he’s not coming out as gay or “transgendered”, this will get zero traction in the media.

In other news ..

If ebonics is still considered a foreign language, he won’t have to go to DLI for a year ;)

Army Special Forces, Marines, and Navy seals are tougher than any NFL star ever thought he was and have a higher calling.

Disclaimer - Not leaving out any other obvious forces just the ones I thought of.

God bless him for his character and for walking away from a seven figure income to serve something greater.

There are many, many things in life more important than money or fame. Like duty, honor, country, and living a life of service to Almighty God and others.

I walked away from a six figure income to enlist in the U.S. Army, went through Basic & Infantry School at Ft. Benning, and fought in ground combat NE Afghanistan.

I think many of my Army brothers would agree with me that defending America and earning the CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) in ground combat with the enemy is priceless, and can never be taken away.

“...he found Christ in college and that changed his views on life...”

The salient point...

He left school early. When he left the NFL, he was going to go back to school to finish. I don’t know if he did or if he enlisted in the Army before he finished. He can finish his degree online while in the Army. Bama has a great program for such a purpose.

I believe it’s better to be enlisted than officer, in my experience...my preference. Lead the men and get the job done, instead of officer politics....
