Online shoppers, services, top earners will pay more July 1

The tobacco levy isn't the only tax going up July 1.

This year, the Minnesota Legislature extended the sales taxes to a number of new services.

Consumers will start paying the state's 6.875 percent sales tax on the digital music, movies, books, e-greeting cards and video and computer games that they download from the Internet or receive by email.

They also will pay sales taxes on some -- but not all -- Internet purchases. The new law requires online retailers that have a physical presence or affiliates in Minnesota to start collecting state sales taxes, eliminating their advantage over Minnesota's bricks-and-mortar stores that already collect the tax.

Last week, Amazon.com -- one of the biggest online retailers -- said it would cut ties with its affiliate websites in Minnesota by the end of June so it would not have to collect the new tax.

Go for it Minnesota goobers...kill off all those pesky internet sellers trying to make a living in your state. Internet shoppers aren’t stupid, but YOU are.

The biggest tax increase is a 2 percentage-point hike in income taxes on the top-earning 2 percent of state taxpayers. Those 54,000 taxpayers will pay the state about $1 billion more over the next two years.

No they won't.

If anybody goes back and does a study 3 yrs from now, they'll find that almost NONE of that projected tax revenue happens.

They say abortion is the liberal sacrament, but I forgot about taxes. Liberals firmly believe that if someone is profiting, no matter how fair the deal, somebody should have the bejeezus taxed out of him or her. Liberals exist to tax people.

And when the budget doesn’t balance next biennium, Governor Jim Beam will call for even more taxes.
