Gov. Deval Patrick says he is worried about push in Congress to cut food stamps
The Republican ^

With new statistics showing a heavy reliance on food stamps in cities such as Holyoke and Springfield, Gov. Deval L. Patrick said he is concerned about a move in Congress to cut the assistance program for low-income families including tens of thousands of people in Massachusetts.

"I'm worried about the future of the program," Patrick told The Republican. "I am worried about the fact that so many people need the program. And that has to do with the bottom falling out of the global economy and our climbing out of that, slowly but surely."

Patrick, a two-term Democrat, said his family received food stamps when he was a child growing up in Chicago.

"It's a modest benefit," Patrick said. "It's not a way to live lavishly. It's just a way to sustain yourself until you can get up on your own feet. The reason the program utilization has expanded in the last several years is because more people have needed them and we're doing a better job of finding where those people are and who they are."

After some astronomical growth in the program over the past decade in Western Massachusetts and across the country, Congress is considering a new farm bill that would reduce spending for food stamps.

In Massachusetts, leaders of the state House of Representatives are pushing an anti-fraud bill that would require photos on state electronic benefit cards for welfare and food-stamp recipients.

Then why do I see so many SNAP recipients buying $40 birthday cakes, steaks, etc. Care to explain that Deval?

Like the IRS refunds that went to 41,000 illegals
at one address (requiring the US Postal Office to
probably set up a new zip code or two), Patricks’ EBTs
no doubt go by the thousands (without any record)
to nameless criminal illegals at single addresses.

He could cut them in his state himself and have a little control.

When the GOP took over in Michigan they cut food stamps to some 36,000 college students. Jenny Granholm had made them available to all college students regardless of need. We had millionaire trust fund babies getting food stamps.

The EBT card is more than food stamps. Not all EBT cards are cash capable because some are strictly for food.

it is not the cut in food stamps that ought to be the lead story, but rather who qualifies for stamps. IMO, Mid-income earners have no business qualifying for food stamps and other poverty benefits, as they do!

If you’re going to push for food stamps to be rolled back, then make sure American jobs are growing.

Bring back American jobs first.

Governor Patrick’s words tell you all you need to know about the Democratic Party’s agenda. They never want to repeal that program because their entire political survival depends upon keeping a significant number of Americans dependent on entitlement benefits. If he really cared about the people of his state he would be talking about welfare reform but we know that’s not going to happen. When will this country wake up?

‘our climbing out of that, slowly but surely’

How do Dems continually get away with the ‘economy is getting better’ crap?? Have they looked around?? Never mind, I know how they get away with it.

Here is an idea: No food stamps if you have cable TV or Internet.

Cutting foods stamps would be the correct thing to do. There are so many obese degenerates on food stamps that they need some help.

Only exception, if they have children in school and have the most basic/cheapest internet available in that area.
