WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act had an instant impact in Texas, where Attorney General Greg Abbott announced that the state’s photo Voter ID bill, blocked by federal judges last year, would “take effect immediately.”
“Today’s ruling ensures that Texas is no longer one of just a few states that must seek approval from the federal government before its election laws can take effect,” said Abbott in a statement.

Why would anyone think Holder won’t sue Texas? He already sued Voter ID states leading up to the election, long after SCOTUS had already upheld Voter ID in April 2008.

Considering Houston's last mayor and mayoral contender (Bill White and Chris Bell) tried unsuccessfully to take higher office (Bell lost his Congressional seat during redistricting to a black Democrat), I have to wonder if Houston's lesbian mayor is being groomed for the national stage as well.
Lee P.Brown was an incompetent stooge who was propped up by the local media but even his failings couldn't be shielded by the end of his run. He'd only stand a chance at holding Sheila Jackson Lee's office.

Actually IMO we need to clone him. The governor of Texas actually doesn’t have all that much authority. If Abbott is elected to that position then we have lost one of the best AG’s in the United States and there is no one to take his place.
Haven’t heard anything from Mississippi AG jim hood and don’t expect to.

Texas was already getting tough on citizenship. They strengthened the requirements to establish residency and get a drivers license or ID card. But supposedly people could vote without a license or ID. Guess that all changes now too.

there was a bill passed but not enacted in time for the 2012 election, as I recall.
The VRA was enacted to ensure access, not outcomes. Minorities also got what evolved into guaranteed outcomes. The ruling removes the outcomes. The result will be that minority representation will more accurately reflect their percentage within the population. They will have to moderate and assimilate in ways they have resisted for the past several decades.

Honestly, if I were Black, I would want Affirmative Action to go away, too. Blacks will not have credibility in high positions until Affirmative Action is a thing of the past. With Affirmative Action, any Black in a position of power is perceived to be lesser than their position.......an Affirmative Action pick. Blacks need to show they CAN make it on their own. What a sorry state of affairs, and the race hustlers just keep on whining.
Voter IDs are so last election, they have moved on to full bore voting machine fraud.
