On Wednesday, June 19, the Sedona City Council held a special workshop regarding Arizona Public Service (APS) plans to deploy utility smart meters in Sedona.
Sedona Smart Meter Awareness (SSMA) is raising awareness about the cost, privacy, health and safety hazards of utility smart meters. APS and SSMA presented information about smart meters. Both sides were given equal time. Only ten public speakers were allowed due to time constraints, however all spoke in opposition to Smart Meter deployment. The meeting was standing room only. Nancy Baer, SSMA representative said, “APS representatives seemed to be in over their heads when Councilors began asking questions. Sedona Smart Meter Awareness created a solid, fact-filled PowerPoint presentation delivered by Warren Woodward. All concerns were thoroughly covered: health, safety, privacy, and cost.”
In response to the question of federal requirement to install smart meters, APS confirmed, “There’s been no federal mandate for us to move in this direction.”
APS currently has a proposal on file with the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) to charge opt out consumers $75 upfront and $30 more added to their monthly bill. Every councilor objected to that proposed fee.

I am sure there are conservatives in Sedona, we have a few Freepers there for sure. But, Sedona probably doesn’t vote (R) all too often.
I love the town. Been going there occasionally for 40 years and was just there three weeks ago. What a majestic setting but there are some real space cadets.
Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon was a pretty neat place back in the 60s and early 70s. Then it became infested with California liberal freaks looking for some sort of mystical “vortex” or some such silly ****. I stay as far away from that freak show as I can.
Doesn’t Sedona run on pyramid power, or some such thing?

About what the extra labour involved in manual readings costs. Seems fair to me.
If they tried imposing that fee on me I would "opt out" of living there.
I can see the day when Kalifornia's liberal leadership tries such a thing. And it's probably not too far in the distant future.
This Freeper almost moved to Sedona, and owns a building lot within walking distance of city hall. Proximity to an airport changed our minds.
It’s good to see cooler heads prevail when it comes to allowing smart meters. The home owner association seems to be managed well. The only glitch it that I have to pay for sewer even though the lot is unimproved. They were counting on so many connections that never occurred because of the recession.
Sedona is to the left of Berkeley when it comes to Fruits & Nuts.
Smart meters are “progressive”
Surely Caliph Baraq would support their usage.
The best explanation I’ve heard for Sedona is kind of New-Agey. An exceptionally beautiful place, with dark red rock forming odd shaped mountains, its terrain is also unusual, the junction of desert, scrub and pine forest.
In any event, the New Agers say that it is a group of four “energy vortex mountains”, one of which is extremely “male energied”, another one extremely “female energied”, and the other two sort of half-and-half.
However, the people of Sedona seem to form two sociological groups: either type-A personality, Yuppie, rigid and anal retentive; or addle-headed artistic types that are very creative but can’t focus enough to tie their own shoes.
These two groups self segregate, so you end up with a divided town. I’ve no idea if it is caused by their vortexes, but the end result is a nice place to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there.
It's a town that touted the amount of business they could draw if they built that new road, but in the end killed the very businesses they were touting by hiring incompetents who took far longer than anticipated to complete the job.
By the time they were done with construction, many of those unique mom & pop stores had closed due to lack of access to their business, never to open again.

Here in Sparks, NV, the Opt Out was $100 (I think that’s right. It may have only been $50) and $10 a month because they send someone out each month to actually read the meter. The guy who swapped out my old meter showed me the new one and it’s identical except it had been zeroed out.
APS said is costs $1.80/mo per house to read meters. Look on your bill. You’ll see the charge. It is not and will not be in the foreseeable future $30/month. Especially if the whole city is opted out and one meter reader comes and reads all the meters.
