KEVIN Rudd has been sworn in as the nation's 28th Prime Minister, alongside Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and new Treasurer Chris Bowen.
Governor-General Quentin Bryce confirmed the Labor caucus' decision last night to reinstall Mr Rudd in the post it removed him from just over three years ago.
Mr Rudd’s wife Therese Rein, daughter Jessica and granddaughter Josephine were at Government House for the ceremony.
Mr Albanese’s wife, former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebutt, accompanied her husband.
Mr Rudd will make a statement to parliament at noon, asserting his authority as Prime Minister and challenging Tony Abbott to bring on a no-confidence motion against him.
The Opposition Leader earlier ruled out such a motion, knowing he lacks the required crossbench support.
Mr Abbott said that instead he wanted the people to make him prime minister.
"The honourable way to become prime minister is at an election," Mr Abbott said.
"It's not through some back-door deal with the faceless men, or through some horse-trading with independents on the floor of parliament."
He said Mr Rudd must now declare the election date, and it could not come soon enough for the Australian public.
The Governor-General last night received advice from the Acting Solicitor-General to commission Mr Rudd as prime minister, while requesting he confirm his appointment in the House of Representatives “at the first possible opportunity”.

Rudd challenged for the leadership of the Labor Party last night and won the vote. And the Leader of the Party that controls the House is the Prime Minister.
She’s announced she will not contest the next election - due in a few months from now at most. This is considered a resignation from politics (going sooner would waste money on a pointless by-election as Parliament adjourns tomorrow for the last time before the election, so nobody would expect her to do that).
Rudd was previously Prime Minister from 2007-2010 and was pretty bad. But Gillard was worse.
He’s a less extreme socialist than her, but still a socialist.
The risk is that he may do better at the election later this year than she would. Labor is still very unlikely to win, but it may not be the massive landslide victory for conservatives the polls were indicating we were heading towards.
Tony Abbott (who was Health Minister in the Howard government) should become Prime Minister after the election in a few months - he’s a conservative in Howard’s mode - maybe even slightly more conservative. But I’m not convinced he has quite the leadership skills of Howard. Even so, a massive improvement on what we’ve had for the last six years since Howard.

Australia reached unprecedented heights of prosperity under John Howard with low unemployment, a strong Aussie Dollar and a huge BUDGET SURPLUS.
Kevion Rudd defeated John Howard after Howard led Australia for nearly 10 years.
Rudd was toppled in an internal party coup that made Gillard the PM. Gillard won an election over Tony Abbot 2 years ago (which almost created a hung parliament). She had to convince one or two independent candidates to form a coalition with her.
Now, Kevin Rudd regained his position with a counter-coup.
All I can say is this — the Labor Party (which both Rudd and Gillard belong to ) are the equivalent of our Democrats in Australia.
The Liberal Party ( despite the name ) are the more “conservative” party.
I feel for ya, mate.

Julia was out and out a leftie and really made no bones about it. Kevin is more a “I will sign all the UN treaties you want” leftie and smile like a smarmy git while doing it. “Fair suck of the sauce bottle” (puked again).

Isnt this the same individual that wasnt afraid of being overly friendly with China(almost to the point of appeasement)?
I’d watch to see if that country reverses its remaining objections to China’s influence(e.g. their rejection of Huawei out of national security grounds). If he is who I think he is, he’s all but an extension of the PRC.
Well, yes, but that was an anomaly with strong contributing factors. There wasn’t enough time for the damage to become manifest. He had a firm grip in the levers of power. He had the fanatical support of an adoring media. He had massive voter fraud. He had the IRS preventing opposing PACs from even existing. He had the DOJ protecting voter suppression.
Re-electing Jerry Brown? No excuse. Nor rhyme. Nor reason.
