Hong Kongs Justice Secretary said the US confused Snowdens middle name, lacked his passport number in a request for his arrest and failed to provide evidence for charges, preventing HK officials from detaining the leaker before he left the territory.
The Hong Kong government did not assist Edward Snowden, the man who revealed the top-secret NSA surveillance program PRISM, in leaving the territory, but incomplete paperwork prevented officials from issuing a provisional arrest warrant, Hong Kong Justice secretary Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung said on Tuesday, according to the South China Morning Post.
The US referred to the former CIA employee and NSA contractors middle name as James, however the Hong Kong Immigration Department had the name Joseph, Yuen said. The application also lacked Snowdens passport number, so there was no legal basis to prevent him from leaving Hong Kong.
Therefore, it was impossible and there was no legal basis under Hong Kong law for the Department of Justice to ask a Hong Kong judge to sign off on a provisional arrest warrant, Yuen said adding [Thus] there then was no legal basis to restrict or ban Mr Snowden from leaving Hong Kong.
A Justice Department spokeswoman told reporters Hong Kong officials claimed to be confused on a point of Snowdens middle name, using that as a pretext for failing to act on the US extradition request.
The US said Sunday it was disappointed by Hong Kongs troubling failure to detain the man responsible for the biggest leak of US intelligence in history, before he fled the territory on Saturday. The White House has insisted that the personal information in the paperwork of the leaker the US submitted to Hong Kong was correct.

Seems some mix up from Russia on the Boston Bombers. kept us from catching those unsavory brothers. These Countries with such Hi Tech knowledge and equipment, sure do seem to screw up bad, Touche big boys.
The hilarity is that HK came up with a diplomatic excuse about the middle letter “J” in Snowden when the US filed the extradition request.
And the irony is that we don’t even know what Odumbo’s real name is...
Then they can release the document and we can compare it to the one the Chinese received. Trust but verify.
Steve Dunham is his name.
So what does it look like? I’m sure the White House kept a copy of those documents. It’s not as if Barry would ever lie to Americans. Doesn’t he always say trust me I’m not a dictator?
How difficult would it have been to “flatten” the many layers in the “digital copy” of Obama’s “birth certificate”? I do not understand how such an incompetent bunch of goons managed to hijack our federal government. And yet they keep getting away with it.
LOL I wonder who, this time, didn’t know nothing and nobody did it.
Good question. But perhaps Eric Holder signed his name to the extradition papers.
Holder signed it, but didn’t authorize it or have any knowledge of it. He will however, investigate the situation... and get back to us approximately never.
The Department of Justice has just appointed an investigator to look into this matter. Drum roll please ... Guess who? It’s Eric Holder.
Rest assured, they will find whomever filled out the faulty paperwork, and he/she will be promptly promoted.
So that’s how Barry got his White House job.
