Members of the Russian Presidential Council for Human rights said that it would be justified if the US whistleblower Edward Snowden received political asylum in a country of his choice, including Russia.
The head of Russias top official Human Rights Body, Mikhail Fedotov, told reporters on Wednesday that it would be just if some country grants Snowden political asylum. He added that the reports that the Venezuelan government was ready to look into such request were raising good hope and that it was his personal impression that the whistleblower would get political asylum where he wants.
He must be granted protection regardless of national borders. And this does not apply only to Mr Snowdens story this applies to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, and many other people, including journalists Russian and foreign who disclose secrets in order to warn the society against dangers, the Interfax news agency quoted Fedotov as saying.
Because of such people we become stronger and the special and diplomatic services must become smarter and understand what can be done in the modern transparent world and what cannot Fedotov added.
Another member of the Human Rights Council, Kirill Kabanov, said Edward Snowden should not be handed over to the United States as this would violate his personal rights.
It goes without saying that Snowden acted as a Human Rights advocate but right now the US authorities are very resolute in their intention to punish him. My opinion is that we should take a very precise position no handover, Kabanov told the ITAR-TASS news agency.

There would be a show trial in the U.S. for him. They wouldn’t even let him speak in his own defense for fear he would reveal more of the government’s misdeads.
The question is. Does the cat have the mouse in his mouth yet or is there more to come . . .. I await with joyous anticipation.
Interesting that they explicitly included protections for Russian whistle blowers in their statement.
I seriously doubt he would live long enough to face a trial.
is he a US person?
Yep. He's natural born, so the USG doesn't get to revoke his citizenship, as it might, if he were naturalized and turned out to be, say, Ivan the Terrible.
The business about revoking his passport is mickey-mouse. Other countries can chose to (1) honor it, (2) laugh at it, or (3) issue him their own travel documents (LOL).
June 10th was the last time Snowden was *seen.*
I think they are just pulling a little shell game here. I doubt whether they are going to announce where he is really going or when. Fortunately Obama didn’t have someone shoot down the plane load of “journalists” hoping to interview Snowden on their way to Cuba.
Maybe it really would be better for Putin to announce the exact flight taken by Snowden and let MSM book flight tickets. Snowden will be totally safe since Obummer’s not dumb enough to shoot down his propaganda team. Meanwhile, Snowden could hold forth on a 12-hour press conference where he can explain the Prism program in greater detail.
So much for the Obama admin pretending that the humanitarians in Russia and China are their best buddies. Maybe the world really does not like a bully in sheep's clothing. Nobody takes kindly to governments abusing their own people after lecturing everyone else on doing the same and expecting reform. There is something fundamentally twisted about that prospect. Tread lightly oh rulers of the "Transformed US". The world is now watching.
The entire dance we see here could simply be for the wounded and far from reality.
After the Conservative Revolution let’s trade Lindsey Graham and John McCain w/ a side dish of Rubio to Russia for Snowden.
“I seriously doubt he would live long enough to face a trial.”
You are correct:
Like Hastings, Snowden is an accident waiting to happen!
Throw in Pelosi and you have a deal!
