Left-lane hogs, beware.
You could be charged double for failing to keep right under a bill passed Monday by the Assembly.
Motorists who clog the left or center lanes instead of using them to pass another vehicle would see fines increase from between $50 and $200 now to between $100 and $300. The bill calls for $50 from each violation going toward signs reminding motorists who enter New Jersey about the states stay-right law.
On behalf of road rage, I move the bill, said Assemblyman Gilbert Whip Wilson (D-Camden), a co-sponsor of the measure, which passed 69-7.
Aside from drinking and driving, failure to keep right is perhaps the most hazardous action on roadways, said Assemblyman Declan OScanlon (R-Monmouth), also a co-sponsor.

In Texas turn signals are a suggestion... the driver is thinking of going left or right but haven’t made up his mind yet. /s
When I was learning to drive I was told one of the most important rules was to drive so you could "hit the ditch" in an emergency. Hard to do when you're in the left lane.
“required to signal lane changes”
Unfortunately, just like folks blocking left lanes, there are folks that zoom up and block your path when you signal. It’s much more common in urban areas. In those places, signalling will typically prevent you from getting where you need to go so folks are “trained” to signal only when someone else can’t do anything about it.
I put those type of “blockers” in the same category as the left lane folks since, when I’ve tried to pass such folks on the right, most of the time they speed up. Some outright flooring it to prevent me from getting ahead of them.
Arrogant assholes who drive too fast are a MAJOR cause .I wish all you bragging about speeding would get daily tickets!
If you think the speed laws are too low, then campaign to have them raised.
More signs isn't a bad idea, I think I've seen one, once -- but the law isn't being enforced now, and may never have been. I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for it in NJ -- 0 x $50 will pay for exactly 0 new signs.
Something correct!
Right lane for cursing, middle and left for passing.......
Out on the open Interstate highways I wonder if people using cruise control go brain dead. It’s aggravating to pull up behind someone that’s slowly overtaking a truck until the highway starts a slight downgrade. Then the truck starts pulling ahead, only to start falling behind on the next upgrade, but the idiot won’t accelerate a little to get it over with. It’s as if people think the gas pedal won’t work if they have cruise control engaged.
"...and they drive with pride...."
If the speed limit - the law - is 65, why are people attempting to pass when you are traveling at 65 ?
I have received speeding tickets when I was young. I was driving faster than the posted speed limit.
I refuse to be forced to drive faster than the speed limit.
No one is going to force me into getting a ticket.
If traffic on a 65-mph road is moving at 55, then anyone is legally entitled to travel in the left lane, since they are passing those going 55 in the center lane.
If someone wants to drive 85 in the left lane and has to slow down to the legal limit of 65, that’s just too bad.
Nothing in the law supports driving over the speed limit except for while a driver is in the process of passing.
If you cruise for miles and miles at 80+ in the left lane, you are breaking the law.
That has been my experience too. It can be difficult dealing with generations of drivers so inculcated with phony self-esteem. “Letting” someone get ahead “their lane” would demolish their self-image. What a bunch of selfish losers they are.
Nice. Hopefully this will be equally enforced against those people who think the left lane is the “fast lane” and that they can stay in it flying 20 mph over the speed limit.
” I really dont know why that is, but PA drivers are the worst when it comes to having a clue about driving on multi-lane highways.”
Here in Eastern PA, it is always New Jersey drivers who are gumming up the works.
It has to do with common courtesy. If someone is coming up behind you, move to the right. It should not even have to be a law, it should be nothing more than a recognition of your fellow man. Oh damn, must have been dreaming. There for a second I was thinking that most people really might give a $#!*.
Contrarian that I am, I see a problem here. More than once, I’ve been forced into the left/middle lane, or forced to slam on my brakes, by some idjit merging onto the road (I guess their teacher never taught them the meaning of “yield”). My aunt was severely injured when some fool “merged” onto the interstate right on top of her.
So, I tend to get over when coming up on an exit and just because some Mario Andretti wannabe is barreling up the road at over 20 mph over the limit doesn’t mean I’m going to risk a speeding ticket. I’ll do 10, maybe 15 mph over, but I like having affordable car insurance.
Bless her heart my mother in law who I really do love like a second mom will not get out of the left lane for anything, she camps and cannot figure out why people ride here bumper and pass her on the right. I always dread driving with her.
Obviously it varys by state. In WV the troopers don’t bat an eye at 80mph unless you’ve got NJ or NY plates. Then they’ll nail you while the locals speed by. I like the folks from Kentucky that drive through the state. They’re strictly pedal to the metal.
QUESTION—
How come people with handicapped plates drive so slow? How come tradesmen driving vans drive so slow? I always avoid getting behind a van....driver is usually an idiot as far as moving along
If I was handicapped I would drive really fast
In the People’s Police State of New Jersey it’s a good idea to use cruise control at the speed limit almost all the time, even in 25 mph zones. I greatly appreciate people going faster in left lane to take the highway robbery attention off me. When I use the left lane, the car I’m passing often speeds up which leaves me plugging the left lane for too long. Sorry about that! I do my best to get you back to running cover for me.
>How come tradesmen driving vans drive so slow? <
The more weight in or on the vehicle the harder it is to stop. Not to mention the fact that full size vans do NOT handle like the average VW Jetta.
I would say the most hazardous thing is failure to yield to the driver in the leftmost lane - as in they see you signaling to change lanes rightward and speed up to get past you on the right before you can make the change. Pure jackassery. Or they change lanes left in front of faster-moving traffic without increasing their speed to match the traffic flow.
The prima facie speed limit is 65 or 70 - in California it's understood even by the CHP that the real limits are more like 75 and 80. 90 seems to be where the tickets get written. On I-15 north out of San Diego if you go 85 in the middle lane you'll have people passing you on both sides. I think 85 is a fairly safe real limit. Things are far apart in the West. At 65 you'll never get anywhere. :).
