What? No doobie??
;-)
IMHO...
I put a lot of time in on those roads, each is their own unique deal. I shifted my times mostly to middle of night, it’s different then, of course. No problems, but like you say, if you’re in the left on them in middle of night it’s a “brisker pace”. You don’t get pulled over on TPK unless you start sticking out. Late at night smooth lane changes are fine, often though you can stay in left and no one is near. The left is like an express to Wilmington/Philly.
FYI for anyone not familiar, sounds contrarian, but if you’re over 80, it is better to tap breaks when you see a trooper late at night on TPK; just admit you were a little “hot”, oops, I’m slowing down. Not slamming on breaks, just drop a few mph and continue on smoothly. Just blowing past him, well into 4pt territory, like well over 80, you may or may not be get pulled over, depending on him. Don’t forget, the points are doubled, so you’re looking at 8pts, 10pts if you’re 95 or more. The number of the highway is not the speed limit, even though in NJ it seems that way sometimes !
A consistent, smooth drive shows you’re going somewhere and you’re no trouble. It’s kind of autobahn-y late at night if you drive smooth, usually it’s great. Great way to have a cigar, stock up on coffee in a good thermos first, tpk coffee is only if desperate - best to drive direct to wilmington or philly. You really haven’t lived until you’ve taken an S-class on a moonlit summer night trip with a good cigar and good coffee and the moonroof deployed and your favorite tunes on the bose.
Better than flying (even 1st) for short trips where you have the time.
