A Louisiana sheriff is standing firm on not accepting Department of Justice funds for the Young Marines program after he was told he couldn’t mention God if he wanted the funding. Bossier Parrish Sherriff Julian Whittington said the demand infringes on his religious freedoms.
Whittington said he was appalled at the funding condition, spelled out in a letter from the Justice Department saying any mention of “God” or any “voluntary prayers” could not be included in the program if it was to receive the $30,000 in funding.
“Last time I said the Pledge of Allegiance, it had God in it,” Whittington told KTBS, a local TV station. “The last time I picked up a dollar bill this morning, it had God on it. You mean to tell me that we can’t have voluntary prayer or mention God in our program?”
Fox News reported that the Justice Department took issue with the Young Marine’s Oath, which says:
“From this day forward, I sincerely promise, I will set an example for all other youth to follow and I shall never do anything that would bring disgrace or dishonor upon God, my Country and its flag, my parents, myself or the Young Marines. These I will honor and respect in a manner that will reflect credit upon them and myself. Semper Fidelis.”
Local clergy members are standing behind Whittington.
“We want to make sure that program stays in place and I want to applaud the sheriff for taking a stand the way he did to not compromise the integrity of the program for a few grant dollars,” Pastor Doyle Adams Sr. of Elizabeth Baptist Church told KTBS.
Whittington said it’s not about the money, but the principle. The character-building program has been in place since 2002 and has been sanctioned by the U.S. Marine Corps. Young men and women between the ages of 8 and 18 are taught discipline, leadership, teamwork and commitment.
Local supporters have come forward, Whittington said, and the program is ready for a group of new recruits starting this week.

I doubt the sheriff will have any problem finding replacement funding.
I’m of two minds on this, though. The war against religion by this government is repugnant. At the same time, everyone looking to government to fund their program shouldn’t be surprised when the government starts setting the rules. Especially this government under Obama.
And what are all these people going to do when the money runs out?

We need to win the white house. And then we need to clear house in the military.
We need to bring back some old generals to help choose men of good character.
Move all the gays out of the leadership and assign them to some remote post on an island somewhere, where they can't do any harm but to each other.
Young Marines: Excellent program; oldest daughter was involved as Private First Class, I think. Did a lot of community service type work, in addition to drilling and learning respect for self and others.
But I don’t understand the federal funding being involved; I seem to recall our local chapter making a big issue out of not accepting gov money.
Obama, his democrats and government run media have done an outstanding job at dividing us in as many pieces as possible.
Everything important about our once great country is being destroyed more with each passing day.
Sad. Just sad.
This action was in response to the accounting scandal that involved the DOJ and the Boys and Girls Clubs. This is to distract from the fact that the DOJ funds were not being used for disadvantaged youth, but for large salaries and bonuses for the Progressive creeps running the programs.

My nephew just finished his college degree on a full boat USMC scholarship. SSGT Young Marines. Why doesn’t the gov open up a branch called the Young, Supple Marines? They could tackle sensitivity issues, prank call gay bashers, and learn about the joys of oral sex.
I bet that program would get government funding.
Yeah, just use the word Allah, and not God, and you should be okay.
They might claim they’re just taking their inspiration from US currency.
