The first baby with three parents could be born as early as 2015 after a landmark decision to move ahead on a controversial genetic treatment.
Britain could become the first country to sanction the creation of babies with three genetic parents, despite fears it might lead to designer babies.
The Government will publish draft regulations later this year that will bring techniques a step closer to giving women affected by devastating hereditary diseases the chance to have healthy children.
The techniques involve replacing defective DNA in the mothers egg with material from a donor egg.
The resulting healthy child would effectively have two mothers and a father.
For the first time the germ line of inherited DNA from the mother would be altered which, critics say, marks a turning point in the ethics of test-tube babies.
But the Governments chief medical officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, said the alteration did not affect fundamental DNA that determines an individuals make-up such as facial features and eye colour.
She compared the new techniques to replacing a defective battery pack in a cell that would virtually eliminate the chance of a severe disease in the child.

Babies with three heads and of 5 different sexual orientations to follow soon after, if the liberal idiocy continues.
The Mail tries to make it sound as benign as they can, even beneficial, and it could be, I suppose, if restricted to treating disease. But watch the latest episode of Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman called “Is Sex Obsolete” (if you can stomach it) and it’s clear this is at least in part a continued attack on the family and a truly nightmarish scenario... We could end up with “humans” that have many more than three parents, not all of them human... or two men could have a baby, one of the contributing sperm cells, the other one contributing eggs (believe it or not).

The Eugenics Wars (or the Great Wars) were a series of conflicts fought on Earth between 1992 and 1996. The result of a scientific attempt to improve the Human race through selective breeding and genetic engineering, the wars devastated parts of Earth, by some estimates officially causing some 30 million deaths, and nearly plunging the planet into a new Dark Age. Is there really any doubt that the only reason for research into this heinous possibility, is to support the vanities of perverts?
Babies have been born with three parents for years now. Mom, Dad and the nanny/welfare state.
All Judeo-Christian culture can say is "bring it on."
That's not the norm. It's usually just the mom and the nanny/welfare state.
Isn’t in Scotland that each child will have an assigned “case worker” to watch out for them..?
Goodbye Turkey Basters, hello eye droppers!
Whats the Birth Certificate going to say? “His. Hers and Who’s?
So they’ll selectively abort them until they get one with the ‘gay’ gene?
Yup. You CAN stick a fork in an electric outlet, just like you can stick another utensil in another outlet. That doesn’t make it safe.
Remember when the first invitro baby was born, and some said it would “progress” with designer babies being concocted for cash by godless scientists? Remember how those objecting were called “kooks”?
We are entering an ugly, dehumanizing age that will end in disaster.
Oh goody. let’s make some freaks! It’s not immoral, and insane enough yet!
IF a hotly contested Bill passes.

See Robert A. Heinlein’s 1982 science fiction novel, “Friday.” The main character is genetically engineered from multiple (20+) “parents.” As described in Wikipedia,
“Friday...is the story of a female “artificial person,” ...genetically engineered to be stronger, faster, smarter, and generally better than normal humans. Artificial humans are widely resented, and much of the story deals with Friday’s struggle both against prejudice and to conceal her enhanced attributes from other humans. The story is set in a Balkanized world, in which the nations of the North American continent have been split up into a number of smaller states.”
In light of that last sentence, Heinlein’s story may prove prophetic in more ways than one...
Not sure I see what the problem is here. They are substituting the disease-creating strand of DNA with healthy DNA. Seems like the right thing to do for the baby.
That’s not even close to using DNA substitution to create a Marxist, Muslim, Indonesian/Kenyan with a propensity for politics, you know, a designer baby.
