The first baby with three parents could be born as early as 2015 after a landmark decision to move ahead on a controversial genetic treatment.
Britain could become the first country to sanction the creation of babies with three genetic parents, despite fears it might lead to designer babies.
The Government will publish draft regulations later this year that will bring techniques a step closer to giving women affected by devastating hereditary diseases the chance to have healthy children.
The techniques involve replacing defective DNA in the mothers egg with material from a donor egg.
The resulting healthy child would effectively have two mothers and a father.
For the first time the germ line of inherited DNA from the mother would be altered which, critics say, marks a turning point in the ethics of test-tube babies.
But the Governments chief medical officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, said the alteration did not affect fundamental DNA that determines an individuals make-up such as facial features and eye colour.
She compared the new techniques to replacing a defective battery pack in a cell that would virtually eliminate the chance of a severe disease in the child.

Oh goody. let’s make some freaks! It’s not immoral, and insane enough yet!
IF a hotly contested Bill passes.
IN THE YEAR 2525
See Robert A. Heinlein’s 1982 science fiction novel, “Friday.” The main character is genetically engineered from multiple (20+) “parents.” As described in Wikipedia,
“Friday...is the story of a female “artificial person,” ...genetically engineered to be stronger, faster, smarter, and generally better than normal humans. Artificial humans are widely resented, and much of the story deals with Friday’s struggle both against prejudice and to conceal her enhanced attributes from other humans. The story is set in a Balkanized world, in which the nations of the North American continent have been split up into a number of smaller states.”
In light of that last sentence, Heinlein’s story may prove prophetic in more ways than one...
Not sure I see what the problem is here. They are substituting the disease-creating strand of DNA with healthy DNA. Seems like the right thing to do for the baby.
That’s not even close to using DNA substitution to create a Marxist, Muslim, Indonesian/Kenyan with a propensity for politics, you know, a designer baby.
