FReeper Canteen ~ Sunday Chapel ~ I HAVE GIVEN YOU AN EXAMPLE ~ 30 June 2013

I HAVE GIVEN YOU AN EXAMPLE

"If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do." (John 13:14-15) "Surely, what I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not heaven. Neither is it beyond the sea. It is very near to you . . . in your mouth . . . in your heart." (Deuteronomy 30:11-14)

Jesus commands us "to wash one another's feet". In other words, he wants us to lead a life of loving service. Jesus saw alienation, ingratitude, betrayal, hatred, and prejudice all around him. He saw that the only way that humankind would learn to live in peace, to treat each other with love and respect, was for him to give us the example of service to each other by the washing of the feet.

Have things gotten better almost two thousand years after the death of Jesus? Is humankind living in peace and harmony? Are we treating each other with respect and love? The answer is a big, "NO!" There is still alienation, ingratitude, hatred, and prejudice. What legacy are we adults leaving to these younger than us? We keep passing on our hatreds, prejudices, and low self- esteem. There appears to be a general feeling among us of "you are not part of my group, race, kind and clique." Due to these distinctions, humankind is setting itself up for extinction. Today's mass media is full of fresh reminders of the ways humans brutalize each other, seeking a scapegoat for the miseries of life. They set us against each other instead of mobilizing us to overcome the forces which oppress and divide all of us.

We all need to keep in mind the words of the German Pastor Niemoller: "First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out...because I was not a communist . . . Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me." Niemoller could have added, with equal historical truth and even more current relevance, the following..."They came for the handicapped . . . Then they came for the homeless . . . Then they came for the old . . . Then they came for the unborn." What I have just described is not someone else's world. It's our world, the kind of world we keep making, the kind of world we will leave behind. What is there to rescue us from our petty human distinctions of self and clan, of myself and my kind, except service to all, to humbly kneel before each other, taking the other's bare foot in our hands, washing it with the clean, refreshing water of forgiveness, love, and mutual respect.

LT Gabriel Mensah, CHC, USN

Yep. We had three. Two in North Pole and one on the way to Nenana at Skinny Dick’s Halfway Inn.

The North Pole fires are out, but the Skinny fire is still being fought.

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

Amazing Grace
(Click)

By John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, .
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

Late Arrivals Welcome

June 30, 2013

One night when I visited a nursing home, a resident named Tom slipped out quietly from his room, hoping to catch me to chat. After we talked awhile, he asked, “Won’t God be insulted if I become a Christian this late in life?” Tom’s question wasn’t a surprise. As a chaplain, I often hear it in varying forms from the elderly, from those who struggle with addictions, from former prisoners. They think they have a legitimate reason to believe it’s too late for them to know God or to be used by Him.

Tom and I spent time exploring people in Scripture who, because of their past, could have thought it was too late for them to know God. But Rahab, a prostitute (Josh. 2:12-14; Heb. 11:31), and Zacchaeus, a tax collector (Luke 19:1-8), chose faith in God despite their past.

We also looked at Jesus’ parable of workers in the vineyard (Matt. 20:1-16). The earlier the hire, the more labor they were able to give the vineyard owner (vv.2-7), but those hired later discovered they had equal value in the owner’s eyes and would be rewarded equally (vv.8-16). The vineyard owner chose to be gracious to them all.

No matter our past or present, God longs to show us His grace and bring us into relationship with Him.

Father, we are amazed at Your grace! Thank You that
we can come to You at any time for forgiveness and be
restored to relationship with You. Thank You that we
can now be used by You to touch the lives of others.
To give your life to Christ now is to keep it forever.

I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. —Matthew 20:14

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Good evening, Mayor - a Blessed lord's Day to you and yours!

Thank you very much for this evening's lesson! I would add to the roster of those who turned to God late in life the name of St. Augustine of Hippo. Not scriptural, of course, but still relevant to this discussion, IMHO.

My niece just left...she is just back from a trip to Ireland and stopped in before she heads back to Texas. It was a great visit!

Then I stepped out on the porch to turn on the lawn sprinkler and I now have about a dozen new mosquito bites.

It is threatening to rain, which we need badly, but I won’t believe it until it actually rains.

Anchorage just set a record for June....the most days over 21 C in the month.

Ah the homeland ,glad she enjoyed it.
Eire is a beautiful country, used to use it to get to Scotland (Two diagonal ferry journeys) and France(Direct to the South and cheaper),plus many a Vacation.
I trust She travelled around and saw as much as possible.

“dozen new mosquito bites”.
Tea tree oil. Fixes everything.

We’ve just had two record setting seasons, can’t remember what for but one was since 1740 when records began. Must have been coldest Spring.

Have a good Evening Kathy, i’m going into Stealth mode now, see you tomorrow.:)

HEAR MY PRAYER,
O GOD, INCLINE THINE EAR!

"Hear My Prayer / O For The Wings Of A Dove"

"Hear my prayer, O God, incline Thine ear!
Thyself from my petition do not hide.
Take heed to me! Hear how in prayer I mourn to Thee,
Without Thee all is dark, I have no guide.
The enemy shouteth, The godless come fast!
Iniquity, hatred, upon me they cast!
The wicked oppress me, Ah where shall I fly?
Perplexed and bewildered, O God, hear my cry!
My heart is sorely pained, within my breast,
my soul with deathly terror is oppressed,
trembling and fearfulness upon me fall,
with horror overwhelmed, Lord, hear me call,
O for the wings, for the wings of a dove!
Far away, far away would I rove!
In the wilderness build me a nest,
and remain there for ever at rest."

John-Man was a little under the weather this evening, so we had a batch of Sirloins in the broiler - a co-operative effort on the part of Mrs. MacNessa, who prepared the steaks, and I, who stuck them in the oven and set my stopwatch. An excellent result - we had some with a Montreal Steak Rub and some with a Sesame and Ginger Marinade. Very tasty!

Now I really must retire - will talk to you tomorrow - or should I say, later today!

Goodnight!
