July 4 reminds us of all we have to be thankful for.
By Mona Charen
I feel a very unusual sensation if it is not indigestion, I think it must be gratitude.
Benjamin Disraeli
The very wise Yuval Levin, editor of National Affairs, describes the differing dispositions of liberals and conservatives this way: Liberals are moved by outrage at what is wrong with their society; conservatives feel gratitude for what is right.

Gratitude is a disease of dogs.
- Josef Stalin
Gratitude: the difference between a liberal and a conservative.
>>Liberals are moved by outrage at what is wrong with their society; conservatives feel gratitude for what is right.
That is a very wise statement. It is why they succeed in creating change and we fail. Conservatives are no longer the “establishment”. We are the outsiders in our culture and need to learn how to be radical bomb-throwers.
Yep. Now I know how it feels to dislike my country- believe me I hate that I said that. Our culture has been corrupted and we are now the outsiders.
I cannot watch movies I used to love that portray our nation as the great institution is was...too painful in the face of what is happening now.
The 4th will be a melancholy day that will fuel those memories too. What should be gratitude will just be a sad shame.
well, I am very ultra Conservative and I am outraged and can see very little that is right to be grateful about.
and no, I will not say liberals are well intentioned; they are not, they are control freaks with evil intent
>>Yep. Now I know how it feels to dislike my country- believe me I hate that I said that. Our culture has been corrupted and we are now the outsiders.
I know what you mean. It took me a long time to come to the conclusion that this nation is not my nation anymore. It is not lost forever, but we have to accept that we can’t keep loving a nation that despises us and wants us to be slaves. We can’t fix it until we start fighting to overcome the people who have stolen it. We can’t even bring ourselves to kick over a garbage can in protest!
Unfortunately, I do not see this anymore.
The happy, optimistic Reagan conservatives seem to be gone.
I'm deeply angry at the average American voter who has p*ssed it all away by electing the slate of charlatans we now have running the country in return for bread and circus crap like ObamaPhones and other stuff extracted from their fellow Americans.
Your Stalin quote reminds me of why I generally like dogs more than people (with certain exceptions).
If you can’t be thankful for things you received, at least be thankful for the things you escape.
I would say that if you are not outraged then you have no sense of justice.
Well the 2012 election was no choice at all, if you believe the statement only a Democrat or Republican can win
. Here's why:
Obama Romney | | | | | | Revolutionary Fabian Socialist Socialist | | \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / V | Implements Socialism
Sorry, I'm not buying that canard.
Get back to me when the Libertarians, American Party, Constitution Party and a dozen-score other fringe groups who consider you an enemy if you disagree with them on 5% of the issues but agree with them on 95% can ever field a viable candidate.
The all or nothing crowd of 5%ers (or less) is exactly why a strong constitution candidate like Mia Love lost an election by about 1/3rd of the votes which went to the Libertarian candidate.
Gary Johnson was a viable candidate; in fact he got 1% of the general vote — which is really impressive when you consider how hard the Democrat/Republican party[s] slamed down on third parties after Perot got about 20% of the general-vote (this is after somewhat damaged credibility from dropping out of the race for a few months; before which he was getting polled support of 39% of the voters [31% & 25% for Bush and Clinton, respectively]).
According to your line of reasoning, Winston Churchill was no different from Adolph Hitler because they both set the stage for socialized medicine in their respective countries.
Setting the stage
could mean merely winning so completely with an idea and not caring about some other facet that you leave open
that other idea's route. — I reject your accusation.

All or nothing? Romney's proven that he's for socialized medicine, appointing activist judges, and legalized abortion. — How is any of that better than what we'd get under Obama?
Ok, here it comes:
(taking a big sigh, sip of coffee, and settling in)
I am GRATEFUL that I was born an American. Having served my country in lands afar, seeing societies and governments so different - and so screwed up, that I was GLAD to come back home! In the song, “America the Beautiful’, I hear it now, in these years, and think upon the places brought to mind by the lyrical discriptions. I’ve seen the ‘Continental 48’, from top to bottom, from East to West, and in all seasons. From these eyes, there is not, and cannot ever be, a place as pretty and as varied in the particular description of beauty, as this nation of mine.
I am GRATEFUL for the education I received, in those years, being taught American History, American Business, and the other arts and sciences, by military veterans, who gave their stories within their teachings. For all but the last two years of high school, my education came through the school located within the airbases where my father was stationed. Interestingly, you had to ‘stay after school’ for either ‘catechism’, ‘shul’(sp), or for the attention of the teacher that you did not want.
I am GRATEFUL for serving the nation I love. I ‘gave back’. I swore an Oath, that long summer ago, that still is in effect, today. Sure, there are those that think once they ‘got out of the moneky suit’ that they were ‘all done with that sort of thing’. Not me!
Today, I am still GRATEFUL. Why, you ask? There are others, like me, of younger age, who, in thier gratefulness, have stepped forward. Some have given their all. They have done this, to preserve what we have, that has not gone to the dogs, yet. There are others, who in THEIR gratefulness, are coming forth and standing up, in numbers, to turn this nation back onto its true intended course.
Lastly, I am GRATEFUL for those that thwart the encroaching powers of darkness upon this beloved land. That, when it is time for me to rest, I can do so, GRATEFULLY, for the Lamp of Freedom has not been extinguished, and that it shines blinding bright, in the eys of those who desire monarchies, totalitarian states, and slavery.
Long Live The Republic!
Guess you're not pissed of enough, eh?
>>Guess you’re not pissed of enough, eh?
I am, but my fellow conservatives would give me a disapproving scowl, pick up the trash, and scold me for not being a good citizen: “We have to show that we aren’t like those Occupy thugs.”
Well, we sure as hell aren’t!
