Skip to comments.Windows 8 outpaces Vista, takes third on OS popularity podium

On the heels of Windows 8.1 announcements, the Windows 8 operating system is just starting to make moves as the new third most popular operating system. Windows 8 had 5.1 percent of all desktop OS web traffic in June, beating Vista for the first time, according to web analytics firm Net Applications. Windows Vista saw a smaller 4.62 percent of traffic that same month. The OS' positions were switched in May when the W8 numbers sat at 4.27 percent, edged out by Vista's 4.51 percent of web traffic. Interestingly, both operating systems gained market share between the months of May and June. A further feather in the cap of Windows 8 is the fact that Microsoft today revealed its Windows Store has now passed 100,000 apps, a feat the company said it was close to last week during Build 2013.

Sorry, Microsoft. Your shiny new toy has a lot to prove before I spend any money on it.
Someone is still using Vista? Why?
No mention of 7...at least at first.
It works. Upgrading it to Win7 would cost $$.
Not worth it.
I was happy with 98...skipped ME...happy with XP...skipped Vista...and am happy with 7 (laptop and desktop)...and will be skipping 8.
I don’t know who they are polling but every person I’ve met with a new computer running Win 8 says it’s absolutely awful!
Win 7 == 44.37%
WinXP == 37.17%
OSX == 7.18%
Windows 8 == 5.10%
Windows Vista == 4.62%
Linux == 1.28%
Other == 2.11%
Wow ... XP is still hanging on in a strong second place. I wonder if the folks in Redmond can read the hand writing on the wall ...
... thought nobody liked Vista.
Just got my first tablet to play with. Comes with Windows 8, supposedly I (the consumer) should love it more than the normal desktop thing-ie.
So far I am not too impressed, we’ll see.
Any mention of how many were stuck with Win 8 that came bundled with the new desktops they purchased? In other words, Win 8 by default or by choice?
Would be interesting to see usage data from 2005 comparing XP to its predecessors.
Yes, it would. I wonder how many people were using Windows 3.11 for Workgroups in 2005.
I've got 4 machines.A "modern" laptop,a "modern" desktop and two old clunkers (that still work).I run 7 on the two modern machines and XP Pro on both clunkers.
Was thinking NT, 95, and 2000, but no doubt you’d see 3.11.
BTW, its necessary to keep XP for cases where driver support on Win7 is problematic. This issue spans industries and medical.
By the time service pack 3 came out for Vista it was pretty solid. In fact many people referred to Win 7 as Vista service pack 4.
Yes ... and MS got the service packs right. I had not trouble installing them.
I went from 3.1 to 98 to XP and I now am phasing in Win 7. Besides Linux of course.
I scraped Vista of of both my machines and replaced it with XP. MUCH better.
Win 7 is still the best Win OS out there for regular PCs and laptops but Win 8 is very good and will catch on more quickly than some believe. Win 8 is made for touch technology hardware and it shines on those platforms. There has been an uptick in the availability of touch ready desktops and laptops and the ones I’ve tried combine touch screen ease of use along with mouse/mousepad capabilities. Once those systems are the prevalent technology for sale Win 8 will be shining.
Count me among them. I bought 2 new computers because my old ones were going bad. Both had W8. I hate it with a passion.
Yeah..like we will take the experiences of the very few people you personally know, over the scientific data that is compiled from the approximately 160 million unique visits per month from over 40,000 websites, that span the globe that Netmarketshare uses. Applebots are not exactly known for statements that make much of any sense are they?
I'll eat brussel sprouts before I eat red beets, but I ain't gonna brag about it when I do.
XP's success is due to Vista being a total failure. Businesses did not upgrade from XP to Vista when they heard how bad is was. Normally business skip a generation and since Vista did not "count", they were waiting on 8. Since MS will soon not support XP, 8 will take off.
Tablets are nice toys, but for serious surfing/computing I’ll take my desktop.
For the most part, I don’t want a touch screen. I want huge monitors, and to sit back from them. My arms just aren’t long enough to reach a monitor that’s 3 feet away from me.
Ummm..you can easily buy Windows 7 PC’s from all the popular electronics stores if you want. You don't gotta buy Windows 8 if you don't want to. As a matter of fact, most corporations are still sticking with Windows 7, with some still in the process of upgrading to Windows 7. No one is forcing anyone to buy Windows 8 PC’s if they don't want to. Windows 8 PC’s are being sold in exactly the same way, Windows 7, Vista and XP PC’s were sold before them, pre-installed on new PC's. Say does Apple/Google sell their laptops with no OS installed on them?
Well, there are plenty of machines out there for you then, without Win 8.
Well, yes they are, especially when having previous versions of Win then being forced to swallow Win 8.......
Yes ... the one I just built, for example ...
I wonder why?.....LOL!
Sort of a contradiction to your previous post to me isn't it?..........
> Someone is still using Vista? Why?
I use Vista on my Virtual PC server. It is better optimized for very large files than Windows 7, and virtual PCs are nothing more than very large files acting like a full up PC. I tried Win 7, but the virtual systems crashed more often than Vista, so I pulled off Win 7 and put Vista back. Win 7 does have a better gui though.
The folks in Redmond will probably be thinking that just 2 years ago, XP had a market share of 48.3%, which is now down 11% to 37.17%, and that there is a huge XP install base to sell Win 7/ Win 8 computers to, especially when XP support stops in 2014. Pure upside.
Corporates always take their time to evaluate a new OS before eventually deploying it..sometimes over years. When did Win 7 come out? Back in 2009.
Sort of a contradiction to your previous post to me isn't it?..........
Again, you can buy Windows 7 PC’s from all the leading electronics retailers. I gave you a link before right here, which you of course chose to ignore, only to spew out the same garbage again. Not to mention Applebots are not going to be buying Windows PC’s anyway, let alone being “forced to swallow” Windows 8.
If Gates were smart, he’d haul out good ol’ XP and slap a “Windows 12” sticker on it and everybody would be happy. One of our systems has Vista, which sucks. Two others have Win 7. I’m holding on to the XP system like grim death.
Of course, if Gates were smart, at the outset he’d have picked up WordPerfect instead of Word to include in the Office bundles.
Same here... and I am a tech working on the public’s computers, I hear nothing but complaints, I personally hate it myself. It’s just about forcing the consumer to buy their product, if they want a Windows PC.
The problem with Win 8 is that execrable, ugly, annoying, never-to-be-sufficiently-damned touch-screen based user interface. The more MS does to make that go away, and the easier MS makes it for those of us who don't want "Metro" to get rid of "Metro", the better MS's chances of seeing Win 8 be accepted by corporate users and content creators.
Ever heard of Amazon.com?
Right, a ‘toy’ still in my case. Still trying to figure out what apps I can’t live without.
MS software engineers don’t exactly know what I want, or the concept (”Windows 8 puts everything at my fingertip”) was developed by ‘marketing geniuses’.
The Luddites say, "HELLO!"
Of course, if Gates were smart, at the outset hed have picked up WordPerfect instead of Word to include in the Office bundles.
He is only the richest man in America, Has been for over 15 years. Of course he is not smart. Not at all. /sarc
i am Vista came on a refurbished laptop I got runs well on 3GB of ram
Free My Start Button!
Usage statistics are completely worthless and meaningless as when you go to purchase a new laptop/desktop from many Mfgs, they will only sell Win8 which is crap.
It is not a poll when you are forced into an answer.
Yep, been purchasing computers there and other sites for my customers. Please stop the arrogance, there is no need for it.
