Curfew considered after massive brawl in downtown Greensboro

A massive fight in downtown Greensboro Saturday night has some city leaders taking a hard look at bringing back the teen curfew.

Nearly 400 people were involved in the several fights that happened along Elm Street.

Greensboro police arrested 11 people ranging in age from 16 to 20-years-old. Officers had to use pepper spray and a stun gun to try to get the crowd under control. Greensboro Police Department had to call UNCG Police and Guilford County for extra help. Some officers minor injuries following the fights. As soon as one fight stopped another started.

What would you expect? School’s out, it’s the middle of summer, all the summer jobs have been taken, and hanging around mama’s house playing videogames and smoking weed just doesn’t cut it anymore. On top of all that they’re mostly horny, backed-up teenagers. It’s gonna be a long, miserable summer. Watch and see.

There was a lot of individual effort and pride that went into turning South Elm Street into a destination once again and it was quite nice for at least a decade. I watched it turn around, had an office down there.

There's been a turf thing going on for a while, Elm is just west of the historic dividing line between the white and the black sides of town under segregation. The more militant blacks disliked so many white people on “their” side of town. There have been several instances of flash mobs, the sidewalks, once teeming with people on any nice night and slammed Thursday through Sunday, are thinning out.

Two of the biggest bars/nightclubs began catering more to young blacks as a result of this thinning out. These aren't even NC A&T students, who have better sense. These teens are coming up from the projects, they don’t concern themselves with comportment and have no clue that they're going to cause “their club” to go out of business, probably wouldn't care if they did have a clue.

It's a shame. Ignorant to the point of abject stupidity, and a real shame.
