Balz book: Romney considered scrapping bid in spring of 2011

Mitt Romney officially announced his candidacy for president in June 2011. But during the spring of that year, Romney considered scrapping his campaign altogether, as detailed in a soon-to-be-released book about the 2012 presidential campaign by The Washington Post’s Dan Balz.

Romney confirmed after the election that he called his son one morning to tell him he thought he wasn’t going to run. “I recognized that by virtue of the realities of my circumstances, there were some drawbacks to my candidacy for a lot of Republican voters,” he told Balz in January. “One, because I had a health care plan in Massachusetts that had been copied in some respects by the president, that I would be tainted by that feature. I also realized that being a person of wealth, I would be pilloried by the president as someone who, if you use the term of the day, was in the 1 percent.”

During a Christmas holiday trip to Hawaii in 2010, the Romney family held a vote. Should Romney, who lost in the 2008 primary, run for president once again? Ten of 12 family members voted no — including the candidate. Only Tagg and Ann Romney voted yes.

He also worried during the campaign about the surge of Newt Gingrich, even as his advisers tried to assure him Gingrich would not win./div

His analysis wasn’t wrong - i.e. being the 1% and the health care in MA.

If 1% is an automatic disqualifier The Hillary! is out also - the cold, rotten witch!

My one issue was Obamacare — he said he’d get rid of it and I believed him. Also, he knows how to be fiscally responsible. Recognizing that he wasn’t perfect I thought we’d be a whole lot better off with him instead of ZERO. Ah well..too late now.

Mitt Romney Sends Leftover Pizza to Obama Chicago HQ
After spending the day in Chicago fundraising, Mitt Romney
sat down with small business owners at Gino's East,
a pizza joint famous for their deep-dish pizza.
In fact, Romney himself tweeted a photo of a
delivery boy heading out with the loot, writing,
"Great deep dish at @ginoseast.
Sending the extra slices to @barackobama and his Chicago HQ team."

"Obama Doesn’t Need a Birth Certificate"

If he didn't scrap his campaign, he should have scrapped his advisors. They helped McBrain(less) lose and went from that towering victory to help Mitt lose. Now, they are trying to destroy what is left of the Repub Party.

But wait....Mp> one of the arguments people where trying to convince each other with was Romney had great business success and part of that was his staff and people he chose to work with.

Based on that there obviously was nothing wrong with his advisers.

pssst unless his business success was not as it appeared. Maybe he wasn't the brilliant guy people thought, maybe it was just his connections. wink wink nudge nudge
