Guilty of Being Southern
National Review Online ^ | July 2 | Lee Habeeb

Posted on 07/02/2013 6:20:33 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Let’s start with Paula Deen, who admitted to having used the “n” word — 30 years ago. If it had been, let’s say, Alec Baldwin instead, the media would have quickly given him a pass, because, after all, he’s one of them. Alec is a media guy. He’s smart and talented and thinks what they think about life. He’s also a northerner. He was born on Long Island! And my God, there’s no racism there.

Racism is a disease people catch when they cross the Mason-Dixon line.

Paula is from Georgia, and from that one slip, which she admitted and for which she apologized, was imputed all kinds of guilt. She was guilty of being born Southern, plain and simple. And the punishment she’s facing is so disproportionate to her three-decade-old lapse that it cries for someone in the media to defend her. No one has. No one will.

The Food Network will soon learn that their knee-jerk decision to fire her without any proof of discrimination, any proof of a racist past or present, will backfire. And fans who know she was fired, and canned by sponsors, for being born in the South, and for being proud of it — they’ll be waiting for her return, and will reward the network that hires her.

And it wasn’t just white folks heading South. The nation’s African-American population grew 1.7 million over the past decade — and 75 percent of that growth occurred in the South. The percentage of the nation’s African-American population living in the South hit its highest point in half a century, as more black people moved out of declining cities in the Midwest and Northeast.

If the South is such a racially backward place, Justice Breyer, why are so many African Americans moving here?

"...had my first taste of “grits” at Fort Knox when I was 19 (and hated it)..."

Now hold on a minute...if all you've had are Army grits, you ain't had grits, my FRiend! Army cooks could ruin hot water soup, and I never had decent grits in any chow hall, in y 11 years in boots.

Also, if they were loaded up with sugar, syrup, or anything other than butter, salt and pepper (hot sauce or sawmill gravy are acceptable under certain circumstances), you didn't have grits. I saw many a Yankee over the years think because they look like cream of wheat, they were...big mistake.

Cracker Barrel has about the closest thing to decent grits of any national, cookie-cutter, chain restaurant, but they're hit and miss. Next time you're in the South, stop at a Mom n' Pop greasy spoon or a truck stop, and chances are you'll be able to find good grits.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

All in all, a very good article.
It should drive the liberals and the "Establishment Republicans" nuts.

CHEESE grits on the other hand, especially with bacon bits, are just wonderful.

Well,my first...and last...experience with grits was with *Army* grits.Given what I know about what Army cooks can do to just about anything maybe I haven't given grits a fair chance! ;-)

But NASCAR...I just don't get it!

I have lived all over this country. Born way back when Kalifornia was a place to be. Moved to New England when I was very young and son of a GI Brat. All of my ‘formative years’ were spent in New England.

Now, I live in the “CENLA”, er, Central Louisiana area, all 85 feet above sea level, and a swamp not a quarter mile from the house. Imagine the shock of someone who had a very good training in the English Language, hearing how it’s been bastardized, in New Orleans!! Sure, I lived through New England hurricanes on Cape Cod, which was still above sea level, last time I checked. Then came Hurricane Katrina, and all the fishbowl jokes were jokes no more. I learned what ‘grits’ were, in Portland Oregon. It seems that a lot of the wagon train drivers were Southern, and brough their culture with them to Oregon, (the end of The Oregon Trail sits just above the falls in the Willamette River, at the south end of town. So, I had my toe-dipping in Southern Cuisine in the Pacific NorthWest.

Concluding, I have lived here in LA, the longest of any places I have been. I have a reason to anchor. Do I consider myyself “ a Southerner”. I remember so often, I have tried ‘to grow where you are planted’. I believe that when I finally rest, just might be ‘planted’ here.

As to the whole “Paula Deen/southerner” idea, “I am Spartacus!”

GRITS (Girls Raised In The South); or ... grits the food, which is just another excuse to eat butter and salt.
Nothing taste better!

Most racist part of the country is the Northeast. The biggest race riot in American history were the “Draft Riots” in NYC when Lincoln said white men were being drafted into the Union army to help free slaves. Those mean ole Yankees hung every black in sight and said no way in hell would they be conscripted in any Army to free anyone, especially “n******. As far as accents go, I am 63 years old, lived all over the world many times over and never tried to lose my southern accent. I carry it as a badge of honor. I despise Southerners that are ashamed of their heritage. I have been told I sound a lot like fellow Tar Heel Richard Petty and of course he was my favorite NASCAR driver when I was growing up.

If I wanted a “fat assed First Lady”, I would have Voted for Clinton in 1992 and 1996.

The most racist people I’ve met are all New England leftists.

A quick story...I lived for 20 years in an upper middle class suburb of Boston. Some would even call it wealthy (but I'm not wealthy for sure). It's also *very* "progressive",if ya catch my drift.A few years before I moved out someone proposed building some "affordable housing" in one of the nicer parts of town.Well,as I'm sure you expected...the neighbors went ballistic."It's too dangerous"."Think about the environment"."The traffic would be terrible, kids would be hit and killed".Stuff like that.Of course that wasn't the *real* reason.

Also...same subject...google "Commonwealth Day School" and pay particular attention to the hits you get from The Harvard Crimson (yah,*that* Harvard). You'll see a tale about the racism of the best and the brightest of Harvard University. It even involves (in a bad way) Julia Child and Laurence Tribe.Priceless!

Somebody should start Southern Living cable TV channel. There’s 50 million people in the South To cater to. If the folks in New York don’t like it, too bad!

I was talking about the food variety...never heard of the other kind.I find that concept strangely intriguing. ;-)

I don’t know but I haven’t watched the Food Network since this dust-up happened and I’m not going to until they apologize or rehire her. I have to go to Walmart sometimes but I’ll check everywhere else first. This is a high tech lynching, pure and simple.

My first boss out of college was a graduate of Amherst. I remember how impressed I was that he spent his vacation that summer as a Freedom Rider in Mississippi (it was 1963).

When he returned, to his dismay, he discovered that his landlord had rented the apartment next door to a black man. He was absolutely livid -- "I'm not gonna live next door to a GD nigger!"

So, he moved out.

It was my first lesson about liberals.

It is the same way here with Hispanics, they are sooooooo racist, first against blacks and then against whites.
