As the violent standoff between the Egyptian military and President Mohamed Morsy continues, U.S. ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson has become a lightning rod for critics of U.S. policy in the country.
The tip of the spear for U.S.-Egypt diplomacy, Patterson's June 18 speech discouraging street protests has come to symbolize the administration's inability to recognize the potency of Egypt's liberal opposition. "Some say that street action will produce better results than elections," Patterson said. "To be honest, my government and I are deeply skeptical."
Now, with the Egyptian military's 48-hour deadline for Morsy to yield to protesters demands passed, observers fear the outbreak of widespread violence between Morsy's Islamist supporters and moderate critics, and many wonder if the U.S. could've taken a harder line on the Brotherhood during its 10-month rule.
Patterson in particular resisted opportunities to criticize the Morsy government as it implemented increasingly authoritarian policies. In a memorable May interview with the Egyptian English-language news sit Ahram Online, she repeatedly dodged pointed questions about Morsy's leadership. "The fact is they ran in a legitimate election and won," she said. "Of course it is challenging to be dealing with any new government. However, at the state institutional level, we are for instance still liaising with the same military and civil service personnel, and thus have retained the same long-established relations."

“What does it matter?”
With respect, that's her job. An ambassador is there to represent the policies of the government which sent him.
If Ms. Patterson is representing bad policies, that problem points right back to the head of government who sent her: Barack Hussein Soetoro 0dinga Whatever 0bama.
Make room under the bus.
U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, Ann Patterson sez ...
> “The fact is they ran in a legitimate election and won,”
> she said.
So did Adolf Hitler.
And so did your totalitarian, collectivist, statist boss 0bamarx.
She does need to close the embassy and leave. We don’t need another dead ambassador.
> What does it matter?
No, no, get it right.
Shrillery said, “What difference does it make?”
Where’s John Kerry? Sailboarding on Martha’s Vineyard?
This decade’s April Glaspie?
If I were her, I’d be packing my bags right now and planning on catching the earliest U.S. flight out of the country she can...
Wheres John Kerry? Sailboarding on Marthas Vineyard?
He’s talking Climate Change with some other idiot somewhere.
Hey Anne, maybe they are protesting that video. Did you ever think of that?
They weren't a bit skeptical during the chaos of the "Arab Spring." These people are unbelievable.
Patterson’s predicament is emblematic of American policy in the Mideast for the past sixty years. For the most part it is confusing, has alienated the majority of the regions population and has not benefited the United States. The reality is that oil will find its way to American shores as long as we have the hard currency to pay. The sellers must market their oil or they will wither and die. There will never again be a successful OPEC boycott.
US women are three for three. Hilary,Susan and Ann. Need to keep the women voters happy.
Is there any issue the idiot in the White House can’t get on the wrong side of?
has she been involved in promoting the acceptance of sodomy as other embassies have been doing?
She isn’t safe right now and should get out. Prayerfully she has the wisdom not to wait for an Obama transport or count on his protection. Of course they may be suggesting she stand down and wait till things cool off. Is Obama willing to sacrifice another ambassador in an attempt to save face for the MB?
