Army chief ousts Egypt's president Mohammed Morsi

EGYPT'S army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has ousted president Mohamed Morsi and declared the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court caretaker leader.

Mr Sisi, the defence minister in Mr Morsi's government, also announced a freezing of the Islamist-drafted constitution and early presidential elections.

He said a "strong and capable" government would be formed and would have "full capacities".

The army chief said a panel would be formed to look into amendments to the constitution and a law would be drafted to regulate parliamentary elections.

After the announcement, delivered by Mr Sisi in a televised address, Mr Morsi denounced the move as an "illegal" and urged Egyptians to "peacefully resist the coup as he himself will do", a senior aide told AFP.

Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said the roadmap announced by Mr Sisi "meets the the people's demands for early presidential elections".

The army's dramatic move comes after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to call for his ouster, accusing him of betraying the 2011 revolution that brought him to power.

Military is a little too powerful when then can willie nillie change leaders. Egypt like the rest of the Muslim world is not in a desirable state. All this tells me is that no matter who is “elected” only the military really has any power

You really are wise. When you have the tanks, jets, semi automatic rifles you are in charge. The military in Egypt is not non profit. They control a big chunk of construction and other industries. With the 1.5 Billion in aid we send them. It’s all about the money and control.

Exactly; it appears the Egyptians have come down with a real bad case of “buyer’s reMorsi”. Too bad we couldn’t have as much sense.

Will Turkey be the next Islamist regime to be deposed by the military to restore the nation to the ideals of Kemal Ataturk?

I would love to see the look on Obama’s face when he reads about this in tomorrow’s papers.

That was funny. What a dope Obama is. No one even read newspapers any more.

It is not the military that has the power, it is their guns. So who holds the real power in the US ?

It is absolutely amazing the way our Founding Fathers wrote the US Constitution. It was divinely inspired. Normal men (or women/LGBT/handicapped to be PC) couldn’t think of this.

As much as I can disagree with George W. Bush’s policies...see Medicare Part D and amnesty... he was right about one thing.

It’s great to live in a country where power is handed over peacefully. Even Hussein Osama can’t ruin it. Checks and balances.

The problem is that the average American is entirely too comfortable. The Egyptian people have nothing or very little to lose. If Americans tried to do anything, they might not be able to get their daily McDonald’s or might miss the finale of Honey Boo Boo. Priorities.

Here's hoping for "a more perfect union."

Cheers, Egypt.

Yup. Things like this happened in South America pretty often a few decades ago. When the populace elected communist puppets, the army was usually the last resort to depose them without a flat out civil war. You could even go back to the Roman empire for examples of that.

In the US, it is supposed to be different, because the armed citizenry, comprising the militia, should be the counterbalance to any tyrant that slips through. Too bad wannabe tyrants have been eroding the effectiveness of said militia for over a hundred years. We may still be armed, but we lack any sort of organization that would be conducive to flexing our might. So, it may turn out that we are beholden to the standing army after all, just like everyone else.

Twitter is full of thugs claiming they are going to riot and loot if Zimmerman is acquitted. Wonder what will happen when they are surprised by shopkeepers who are prepared and have had enough?

They will go someplace else. IMO, the majority of those twits will not riot in the first place. Rioting from behind the keyboard is much safer.

Gangs will not be attacking a defended position until they are willing to die for their cause. Soldiers who protect their country have such cause; their motives require being able to escape with the loot, unharmed. Vandals, robbers and thieves have no cause that is stronger than fear of maiming or of death. Deeper into the TEOTWAWKI, as gangs consolidate and become military structures, a cause may develop - with severe punishment for deserting and with at least some explanation why gang members must keep fighting and dying. For example, access to food supplies may be only possible if you fight for them. Today this is not the case.

That's what happens when I make edits and fail to reread the whole thing carefully... the underlined section belongs to the second statement :-)

that's bs. no one not even on the internet, not Palin, not Rush, not hannity, not Levin , not redstate, not townhall, not the tea party, etc. no one practically is organizing massive protests that are needed to oust this tyrant Obama. We saw how people did it the soviet republics as in Georgia, now Egypt etc. At least I don't see it and I've been spedning a lot of time on the internet on and listening to talk radio.

no one is calling for this Tyrant Obama to resign for rigging the election with the IRS or importing 100 million socialist 3rd world people, no one is even trying to plan the MASSIve protests and other actions that the Egyptians, Georgians etc did that are needed to oust this criminal , communist , tyrant who did perform coup by ordering his IRS to rig the election for it.

if i had a talk show or greater reach I would say REPEATEDLY , CONSTANTLY. the key is constantly and repeatedly not once in a while . repetition is the key. If I were Levin or Rush I would say repeatedly;

“Obama rigged the election with the IRS , this was a coup. WE must organize ,march, protest and call for his resignation, call for no Amnesty . We saw how the people in Egypt, in Georgia did , removed tyranny, we Americans can do it. on our Independence day I call a for a million to surround the capitol, DC don't let anything move.... “ etc.

who is saying this?

I don’t think so. Erdogan has effectively purged his military the way Stalin did in 1939. It is ridden with butt-licking incompetent loyalists now. If he is about to pick on Assad, Syrian Army no matter how weakened it is will kick their rear the the way Finns did to Stalin in Winter War.

and we need daily, continuous and massive protests every day not little ones once in a while , who is calling for this with all the crimes this communist tyrant Obama has done? I don't see the protest or other actions the Egyptians did taker here, not even close , no comparison.

Rush and other talk shows i listened to were covering the zimmerman trial. that's just talking about what the media wants us to talk about . this trial doesn't affect my life. the IRS does affect all our lives. 100 million immigrants does affect us. Obama affect us. they are focusing on zimmerman (who cares or at least these other issues should be constantly focused on by ALL of us : 1. stopping the Amnesty bill, 2. obama rigged the election with the IRS, 3. gettting obama to resign with protests and work stoppages etc.
