Allow me to be a second turd in the punch bowl. While JPII's pontificate had some towering achievements, he certainly failed in taking on the homosexual clergy issue. There are many permanently damaged lives out there caused by priestly sex abuse. He apparently did nothing to address the "gay mafia" in the Vatican itself, given this latest round of allegations. I think that he never really believed it was a huge problem.

I also believe that JPII knew that the real clergy sex abuse was happening in places like the United States, and he didn't like the United States very much. He distrusted our economic system, he distrusted our freedom, and he didn't like the fact that we were as successful as we were. JPII was infected by the sort of sneering hubris common among European intellectuals.

Was he a saint? I have no idea. He was a great man. I object only to the fact that they "fast tracked" him like this. Time was needed to allow these themes to be developed more fully.

“There are many permanently damaged lives out there caused by priestly sex abuse”

Catholic priests commit sex abuse at a lower rate than pentacostal preachers and always have. There is also more sex abuse among teachers in public schools than Catholic priests. Liberals love to paint all Catholic priests as sex abusers. The reason for that is simple. Follow the money. Jesus predicted 2,000 that forces of evil would always try to destroy his Pilgrim Church on Earth, but that He would be with them until the end of time. If the world stands 2,000 more years the Catholic Church will still be here.
