With over 1.4 million men and women on active duty, and 718,000 civilian personnel, we are the nation’s largest employer. Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces.

2.5 million uniform total to 718,000 civilians. I suspect many of the National Guard and Reserve Forces are part of the 718,000 too. We have a total of under 3.2 total Department of Defense workers..........only about 1 percent of the population?????? That does not sound overly insane to me. I think people looking at the hard numbers should stop saying it needs to be cut. Those are not horrid numbers after looking at the entire pictures and looking at our population in the United States. 1 percent is not bad at all. DOD should be completely safe.....the other agencies in the government should be looked at though.

we were NOT allowed to use any leave for furlough days. cept maybe sick leave.. so we still get our PAID annual leave . crazy.!!

I wont name my agency but only about 40+% were furloughed according to an arbitrary military or civilian “classification” system that everyone is assigned when hired.

My duties are 90% civilian related but i am classed as ‘military’ and got furloughed 11 days. We could get no $$cut amount desired— from Hagel, in order for us to come back and request ALL get furloughed half the days.

I heard AF and Navy did not do furloughs because they cut programs, but Hagel would not allow such in Army agencies.
Set me straight if this is not factual ......

Not true for USAF. We are taking the Fridays off without pay.
