[NY Times Editorial] The Decline of North Carolina
New York Times ^ | July 9, 2013

Posted on 07/10/2013 5:42:47 AM PDT by Zakeet

Every Monday since April, thousands of North Carolina residents have gathered at the State Capitol to protest the grotesque damage that a new Republican majority has been doing to a tradition of caring for the least fortunate. Nearly 700 people have been arrested in the “Moral Monday” demonstrations, as they are known. But the bad news keeps on coming from the Legislature, and pretty soon a single day of the week may not be enough to contain the outrage.

In January, after the election of Pat McCrory as governor, Republicans took control of both the executive and legislative branches for the first time since Reconstruction. Since then, state government has become a demolition derby, tearing down years of progress in public education, tax policy, racial equality in the courtroom and access to the ballot.

The cruelest decision by lawmakers went into effect last week: ending federal unemployment benefits for 70,000 residents. Another 100,000 will lose their checks in a few months. Those still receiving benefits will find that they have been cut by a third, to a maximum of $350 weekly from $535, and the length of time they can receive benefits has been slashed from 26 weeks to as few as 12 weeks.

You clowns are pretty close to having a Weiner as mayor of teh city...after having a d*ck as mayor

And a john named Spitzer as City Comptroller. Indeed, NY... STFU.

Yet another case of New Yorkers knowing what's best for those in flyover country. Gosh, what would we do without those wonderful elites up there?

They won’t listen to reason; they won the war and don’t have to make good sense.

Boo-hoo.....Weiner’s people are unhappy with NC because the sane producers in NY state are heading there to make a living. NY will be left with a massive welfare program, full of loafers and no cash to keep them happy, a dangerous prospect indeed.

The regime via the NYT is scared s*#tless that the NC phenom of turning down the tap on government social programs will catch on across the nation. NC is causing the fed beast enough alarm to put the media monkeys on it.

Let me get this straight, the NYT actually thinks that North Carolina is declining?

They are well aware of how many New Yawkers have moved there and fouled the new nest.

“I am curious as to how NC (a state) can end Federal unemployment benefits. “
I don’t recall the details and no time to search now, but I believe bad administration at NC ESC caused a gazillion dollars in overpayments and NC owes a gazillion dollars back to the Federal Govt.

“Moocher Monday is a big deal with my liberal friends but they can’t keep that up forever. “

As long as the federal checks keep coming, they’ll be in Raleigh every Monday. Cut off the federal checks and they’ll be too busy looking for a job to demonstrating.

Living in NC, my wife and I have been almost shell shocked at the wonderful changes that are happening in our state. For the first time in many years we are seeing politicians that actually represent us conservatives! They are dismantling the tumors created by the left. Hopefully the mooches will start a mass exodus to NY for their handouts.

The power pendulum has swung way too far to the left and we are now living under the oppression of the minority.

A single person claiming to be offended can change what 1,000s are doing.

A single person claiming racism can demand the government discriminate against most of the citizens.

A completely unqualified person can become president if they are a minority.

If this is going to be life under minorities I can only imagine how low the country will sink when they become a majority.

>>See, that’s the big secret: all these bloated Federal “free stuff” programs require STATE cooperation to make them happen. Even SNAP, the food stamp program, is this way. The states’ legislature simply says, “No thanks, keep your dirty federal money”, and voila, no more infinite unemployment benefits.

I agree with you. The out of control size of government often looks hopeless but if enough states start declining these carrot and stick programs, it can make a difference. This combined with some conservative leadership in the white house could roll back decades of commie government.

Shutting down any wasteful government program immediately removes power from the left. They survive almost completely off of government money that they use to buy support. When the left creates some new program like obamacare, it takes a long time to get it rolling and put everything in place. When a program or agency is shut down, it can be almost instantaneous.

Whoa...between Ruger building a new factory here, something about the ACLU telling us we got the wrong answer on our domestic math equation (Marriage = Man+Women) and now NYT all a blather about the republicans in Raleigh and McCrory's not even been office a year?

North Carolina is showing some potential to be the East coast's version of Texas.

(Bible belt, NASCAR and no scorpions...just sayin')

Yankee invasion until 2008 almost turned us blue.
When they couldn’t sell home up north to move to NC , it slowed down.
We need to keep NC Red or don’t move here.

Maybe we need to recombine NC and SC and return to one Carolina. This would result in one state that has everything any reasonable person could ask for. Maybe not as large as Texas or Alaska but certainly not lagging in any other respect. The two together would have real clout. There would be every climate from sub-tropical in the Southeastern corner on the coast to little Switzerland in the Northwest. Every fish from Rainbow Trout to Flounder, golf courses galore, beautiful women, every terrain from pancake flat to mile high mountains and swamps full of Alligators. Deer by the millions, bluegrass music, fantastic barbecue and on and on. Not to mention fine wines and the world’s finest grape, the Scuppernong, which originated on the Scuppernong river in NC. We would need to stop the inflow of Yankees though.

Come to think of it why don’t we combine the two and then resume that fine old SC tradition of secession?
