Texas YMCA Boots Pro-Life Student Group

A group of pro-life students from around the nation who’ve gathered in Austin, Texas this week for an abortion protest at the state capitol has been banned from a local YMCA after pro-choice activists complained about the students using the facility’s showers.

Students for Life of America (SFLA) had made arrangements with the Town Lake Branch of the Austin YMCA to use their showers during their week-long pro-life protest, the group’s spokesperson Alexa Coombs told Fox News. About 56 members of the group are being housed in local churches that don’t have showers. The Washington, D.C.-based pro-life organization had received permission to use the Y’s facilities between 9 and 10 p.m. each night.

“We had an agreement and that was the arrangement for the whole week,” Coombs said.

Not surprising -- given it is the YMCA... I have read things that this organization is not really Christian.

Maybe other folks have had other experiences...

Maybe a local Christian/Catholic School will allow them to use the showers in the gym...

they began to shed the christian part awhile ago.

the latest culmination is they’ve changed the mail logo to “the y”, jettisoning men, and christian.

When they say "Celebrate Diversity" they really mean "Celebrate Perversity."

Guess the Young Men’s Christian Association is no longer Christian.

Maybe they should change their name to the YMAW; the Young Men’s Atheist Organiztion.

Downtown Austin at that...NO surprise is right!

The Austin bumper sticker is “Keep Austin Weird” and there is not much near normal downtown!! Yes, Tolerance is a one way street in most of Austin!

I wonder if Wendy’s (Wendy Davis-more famous for her clothes than her fillibuster..how sad) daughter decided to have an abortion if she’d like giving up being a grandmother??!!

The “Y” is VERY political. They sent a contingent to march in the Seattle “Pride Fest”.

YMCA was an acronym for Young Men’s Christian Association. They’ve come completely 180 degrees and are the YM anti-CA.

From the facebook comments:

"I called the 512-322-9622 number and asked for who was in charge of making this decision. I was transferred and a man answered. I asked him what YMCA stood for. He would not answer me he was very rude. I asked his name and he would not give it! I called back and asked who I had been transferred to in my first call and was told Jason Daniel, associate exec director. I was transferred up Jason again and I confirmed it was him. I then called main office HR and spoke to a very nice lady, Kelli Stoffels. I told her the story and she said he was in the wrong and she will deal with him. So if anyone is rude when you call, call her and complain. "

they now have a statement on their website which makes the situation even worse!!!

http://www.austinymca.org/news/statement-regarding-shower-usage-townlake-ymca

“If any person or group enters our facilities and creates an atmosphere that is disruptive, we have an obligation to our members and program participants to ask that person or group to leave or to refuse them access.”

So I went on the contact link http://www.austinymca.org/contact and sent the following message:

“You said that the Students for Life “create[d ] an atmosphere that is disruptive”. That is a very serious allegation. Can you please specify what disruptive acts (vandalism perhaps?) they committed in your facility? If they did not commit any disruptive acts, can you please clarify your statement? Perhaps its of no matter to you, but some people would be concerned that impugning the reputation and character of another person based on a false accusation is a violation of the 9th commandment.”

When you call or email don’t forget to ask them to support their egregios allegation against the students.

There are still a few groups for which it is OK to refuse service.

A company can’t refuse to sell a gay couple a cake, but singers can refuse to play for the BSA jamboree, and the YMCA can refuse to allow “those people” to use the showers.

They put a statement on their web site. Part of that statement:
That’s what we were striving to do in accommodating the Students for Life group who were in need of a place to shower.

Unfortunately, in this instance, it caused the political debate to come into the Y.

If any person or group enters our facilities and creates an atmosphere that is disruptive, we have an obligation to our members and program participants to ask that person or group to leave or to refuse them access.

There are appropriate places in which to conduct a political debate, and that place is down the street at the State Capitol, not at our YMCA.

Reading between the lines, the baby-killers caused trouble for the Y, so the Y kicked out the pro-life people.

I guess if you stood by the door, and then protested anybody who entered, the Y would kick everybody out.

The article stated that a private high school was found late at night to provide showers to the 56 students.

Pro-lifers wanted to open their homes, but 56 is a long line to wait in for a shower.

Any updates on this?

Maybe various pro-life groups can contact [real] Christian/Catholic pastors in the Austin that they might help these students out...
