A home invasion suspect is dead and a left homeowner terribly shaken.
That homeowner was fast asleep when police say Jason Rabe, 23, of Three Oaks Twp. Mich, shattered a rear window and climbed inside the log cabin-styled home.
The terrifying intrusion played out Monday around 9:15 a.m. EST, along the 6700 E. block of County Road 1000 North. That's about three miles north of Hudson Lake, near the Indiana-Michigan state line.
According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Dept., Rabe rode to the house on a moped with the intent to break-in. The sole homeowner, a middle-aged man, awoke to the sound of shattering glass.
He grabbed a pistol and began to canvass his home, when he stumbled across Rabe, who was carrying a hatchet. Words were reportedly exchanged and a tussle broke out, during which the homeowner pulled the trigger, killing the 23-year-old on the spot.
The homeowner then ran for the phone and dialed 911, prompting LaPorte County deputies to race to the scene. There they discovered Rabe deceased with a single gunshot wound to the upper left chest, and the homeowner who police say was “extremely upset.”

If our country is serious about fighting crime, then it’s WAY past time for congress to enact strict nationwide moped control laws.
Some strange sentence construction and wording in this article. “Words were reportedly exchanged”, “Sole homeowner”.

Much discussion about regrets over killing a violent home invader. Is that sense of regret later replaced with,
“I wouldn’t have shot the no good SOB if he hadn’t lunged at me! It was me or him!”
Mr. Rabe made decisions. Decisions have consequences no matter what. Mr. Rabe broke into a house and was armed with a deadly weapon.
Mr. Rabe forfeited his life.
Mr. Rabe died from his own poor choices. We’ll put it on his headstone.
Message: If you break into houses, you assume all risk of death from a homeowner defending his home.
HOORAY!! May the worthless lives of all violent criminals end thus.
Exactly. When someone breaks into your home you have absolutely no way of knowing their intent or mindset. Only here for the portable electronics and silver? Or bent on torture, rape, and murder? It would be negligent in the extreme to leave your family’s safety up to the assumed good intentions of someone who has already demonstrated they are a criminal. You must assume, prepare for, and act on the worst intentions. Anyone breaking into my home, I will assume they are a deadly threat, and I will stop them with deadly force, applied as swiftly and violently as possible.
