So there were right all along.
It’s important that this is one of the last killings that is linked to the Boston Strangler. Some folks have brought up copy cat killers, or cited some changes in crime scene evidence supposedly indicating a different killer compared to earlier killings. If he’s linked to one of the last killings via DNA, then it’ a pretty strong argument that he did all the killings.
It was DeSalvo. His confession provided enormous detail. The police just didn’t have enough evidence to charge him.
Presumably, corroboration of the detain in the confession provided evidence. That’s usually what it takes for a confession to be admissible, among other things.
There was no evidence against DeSalvo. He did not confess until after receiving assurance that his confession would not be used against him.
So...he was railroaded, in your opinion?
No, not at all. He was convicted of multiple rapes and sentenced to a very long prison term. His confession as the Strangler alleviated the panic and hysteria that had gripped Boston for two years. He was murdered six years into his prison term. Later, various silly theories arose that he wasn’t the Strangler, creating anxiety among the surviving family members of the victims. Now - 50 years on - DNA has proven it was DeSalvo. So it all worked out.
