Indiana school district loses $300K because students refuse to buy first lady’s healthy meals

“I’ve had a lot of complaints, especially with the little guys,” Linda Wireman, a food service director for North White School Corp., told JCOnline. “They get a three-quarters cup of vegetables, but if it’s something they don’t like, it goes down the garbage disposal. So there are a lot of complaints they’re going home hungry.”

Daily free lunch for under 18 yrs. given at local parks consists of sandwich or salad, chocolate milk, fruit, sun chips. Garbage cans are overflowing.

Another part of the article ““I’ve got kids who can stop at Panera and pick up a sandwich that meets none of these criteria. I’m not maybe your typical school district, and they’re assuming that every student doesn’t have access to food, and that’s incorrect in this community,” Amy Anderson told the paper. “Our kids can just wait and just hop in their BMWs and go to McDonald’s, which they’re rebuilding, making it bigger.”

Carmel is an upper middle class neighborhood north of Indianapolis. An old joke about Carmel: What does a Carmel housewife make for dinner? Reservations!

No doubt the black market for junk food is flourishing.

Maybe the little Tots need to be force fed the Food! Now that will teach em’. How dare they reject what the Queen has ordered. Didn’t something like this happen in Romania years back—didn’t end well for the two rulers of that sorry land.

My main take-away from this is that taxpayers are forced to pay for this food for them and they just throw it away, because it is free.

Not sympathetic to their complaints that they are hungry after throwing away free veggies.

“They get a three-quarters cup of vegetables, but if it’s something they don’t like, it goes down the garbage disposal.”

Clearly shows the need for a govt monitor to sit at the lunch table with the kids and force them to eat their mandated quota. This will teach them that there is nothing wrong with tyranny if its for their own good.

When kids are hungry enough, they will eat what’s put in front of them, vegetables included. Obviously, they ARE getting fed enough at home or they would eat the school food.

You must not be a parent

All real parents know that it is pointless to serve white fish and arugula to little kids because they don’t like it, won’t eat it and will complain they are hungry.

A study? I could have told them that such menus would end up with a lot of waste. For $5.00.

Maybe, instead of wasting money on surveys, they apply some common sense.

This thread nor my comment had nothing to do with your parental choices. They had to do with charging me to buy food that kids throw away. If you like to watch your kids enjoy happy meals thats fine with me.

“I am hungry mom”

“Really? Here's some fish and veggies”

“I am not hungry anymore Mom”

‘Thats OK I will save it for you”

Maybe the feds should just stop their involvement in school meals and let the parents feed their kids, or within their communities set up a lunch program that is self-sufficient and voluntary.

The kids aren't being fed fresh-cooked food. It's mostly manufactured stuff sent in individual wrapping. Some of it's borderline edible and nutritional....some of it, McDonald's could put together a better meal with their healthiest choices.

more proof you are not a parent but a control freak

My kids ate well and love fruit and veggies, and milk, not an extra pound among ‘em, but they also had access to chips, cookies, candy and gum, pizza, fries and ice cream and chocolate milk, pudding.........all that stuff has nutrituional value too

it is the liberals that want all to eat only granola, want to limit population, kill granny and babies and make life all about sex

RE :”more proof you are not a parent but a control freak”

Well if people are going to get free stuff taken from taxpayers then I cant cry tears because they have to follow some rules.

Your logic that I should is like you giving your kids your money and telling them that its for them to buy their food or clothes , or toys and McDonalds or anything they want with it, even a pony.

Or just give them money and leave town for two weeks.

anyone that pulls that “you will eat this and I will keep serving it until it is gone” game is sadistic.

Michelle has no business sticking her inexperienced nose into what the cafeteria at school serves. And the kids it is served to have a choice whether to purchase the school lunch or not, and they have chosen not to, that is why the idiot school district is 300K in the hole, because the kids chose not to purchase in droves. It is actually a beautiful illustration of the free market in action.

There's a rule of thumb I go by: if I come across something healthy that they like, I feed it to them often, and in large quantities.

For example, my boys (two sons and grandson) love my marinara pasta, which usually includes bison meat, two cans of stewed tomatoes and a large can of mushrooms. My 3 YO grandson has been eating adult size portions of my pasta for over a year.

Blueberries and raspberries are the usual breakfast for my youngest son. I just wish he'd eat a lot more, not that he doesn't eat a lot as it is. The real answer is he's too active: sports, Boy Scouts, etc.

Not really 300k in hole, Do you mean they get 300K less $$$$ from taxpayers?
So do they still provide free lunches?
