Toward the end of his closing statement on Thursday, Florida Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda posted a slide on a screen in a fifth-floor Seminole County courtroom.
"Which Owner would be more inclined to yell for help?" read the banner on the top of the slide. The slide was divided in two. On the left was a photo of George Zimmerman's Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm handgun, and on the right was a can of Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail. Beneath the photo of the gun was the question, "Who followed?" Under the can was the question, "Who ran?"
So absurd was de la Rionda's presentation, and the whole case for that matter, that the can was turned sideways so the label could not be read. Throughout the trial, prosecutors have called the drink "iced tea" lest the word "watermelon" be said in court. "F***ing" was okay. De la Rionda said it more times than the average rapper, but "watermelon," apparently because of its racial connotations, was not.
Hiding the word "watermelon" was the least of de la Rionda's dishonesties. This one slide had several built in. As to who ran, Martin had four minutes to run the 100 or so yards to the house he was visiting. When he attacked Zimmerman, he was still 70 or so yards from that townhouse. Do the math.
Then, too, from the day the State took over the case, prosecutors knew that Zimmerman was the one screaming for help. All evidence supported that save for the dubious identification by Martin's mother. If the State's jobs were to sow the seeds of reasonable doubt, one could forgive them this deception, but that's not the State's job. That's the defense's.

I hadn’t heard the little nugget about the watermelon pic - hilarious if it weren’t part of such a travesty of justice.
They really showed that with the word "Watermelon" censored? I'm not really sure of whether it was iced tea or fruit juice is that big of a deal.
But wasn't it St. Martin's supporters who made the big deal out of it being "Arizona Ice Tea"?
I agree with the headline...but the “judge” should be disbarred with them.
Either that or elected to the presidency of the League of National Socialist Jurists.
The judge should be impeached.
naw....maybe just put out to pasture...
Just doing what vile lawyers do! Lie with half truths.
They are despicable and among the lowest lifeforms on the planet.
Taking a noble premise of “Everyone Is Entitled To A FAIR Trial” and twisting it to: Every lawyer must do his best to WIN no matter if the truth and justice are served.
Then these despicable humans become politicians and write laws so obtuse and or poorly written that even other scum ball lawyers who became judges, cannot agree on what the laws mean, BUT OF COURSE we must obey these laws and ignorance of the law is no excuse even if judges seem ignorant of the law. IE: USSC 5-4, 5-4, 5-4, 5-4, 5-4...
In a better America, without Low/No information, color-centric, ethnic-centric, voters, we would do much better electing economists, business leaders, teachers (the non-union kind), engineers, ... etc as to elect trained liars instead is why we are where we are.
Why do we insist on supporting people who have been trained to lie and deceive? We might as well hire abortionists to run Womans Health Care facilities... oh wait, we do that.
When Obama proudly announced Martin as his “could be son” the signal was go. Go make race an issue. Go manufacture conjectures and innuendos of racism. Get that “jew” white hispanic for going after his unadopted son.
And so they did. CNN NBC MSNBC CBS and ABC. Because it’s socialist justice !
Don't condemn ALL lawyers. Its only 98% of them giving the other 2% a bad name!
It makes perfect sense if you understand how our trial system originated. It evolved out of Normal trial-by-combat. The original "attorneys" were hired champions, trained killers. The surviving attorney won the case. Rules aren't very important in such a venue.
The defense attorney is theoretically not supposed to lie, but is under absolutely no obligation to bring up the flaws in his own case. That's the job of the other side.
OTOH, the prosecution, as the representative of the State, is legally and morally obligated not to try to hide exculpatory evidence.
With all its flaws, nobody has ever, AFAIK, found a more effective way of routinely getting at the truth than our adversarial attorneys and judge/jury system.
That is, of course, when the parties are on an even playing field. Which, since most of those accused of crimes cannot afford competent representation, they seldom are.
If you want to be shocked, look up the conviction rate for US relative to other nations. Our system convicts a higher percentage than almost any other free country. If I remember correctly, federal cases are over 95% convictions.
Some of this is due to plea bargaining, but I still sincerely doubt US Attorneys have the right guy 95+ of the time.
Acckkk.
That should be “Norman trial by combat.”
I’m hoping some of these guys come out with a tell-all book about the racists that pressured them into prosecuting Zim.
Agreed. The judge is beyond bizarre.
Someone said yesterday that if the tables were turned, the black defendant would have already been arrested, indicted, tried, convicted and sent to prison.
To that I wil say, I will take “who is OJ Simpson for 100 Alex.”
Then they should face charges and convictions for malicious prosecution and judicial malfeasance. They can do hard time, and in a maximum security (not a "country club") prison.
They had this black woman who goes by the name of Scherezade Ali on Dr. Drew’s show last night. She is a big time race baiter, actually calling a half-black, half-white woman “oreo” on his show one night. She made the comment that it’s too bad that if someone has a lot of money who can afford great lawyers, they can go free.
Can anyone say O.J.?
the prosecution also claims a person “in decent shape” can run a 4 minute mile.
What a bunch of morons.
