Edward Snowden gives a news conference at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow with human rights activists Edward Snowden (centre) gives a news conference at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow with human rights activists.
The American whistleblower Edward Snowden has accused the US of waging a campaign of "historically disproportionate aggression" against him during an extraordinary meeting with human rights activists and Russian officials at the Moscow airport where he has been trapped since 23 June.
In his first appearance since disclosing his identity in the Guardian last month, Snowden insisted he had no regrets and had made a "moral decision" to leak dozens of secret documents outlining US surveillance programmes. He also announced he would apply for political asylum from the Kremlin and appealed to those present for help in leaving the airport.
The US has lobbied governments around the world to refuse entry to Snowden and has invalidated his US passport.
Last week, a plane carrying the Bolivian president, Evo Morales, was grounded in Vienna after several European countries blocked their airspace amid suspicions that Snowden was on board.

Eichmann was even worse! Idi Amin is also useful for winning arguments.
Folks need to remember that Snowden embarked upon his contract with the intention of disclosing secrets and that his major initial heartache was that Obama broke his promise to close Gitmo.
Also, remember, Snowden didn’t go to a member of Congress (such as Rand Paul) of the media to reveal this. He went to China. Then Russia. Now Venezuela.
And he has threatened to reveal other secrets as well.
Finally, he is the first US person with a security clearance to publicly state that Stuxnet was a joint US/Israeli operation. What possible “patriotic” motivation could he have had for that revelation???
His big mistake was making his first announcement for Hong Kong. He should have done it from Iceland. He would have had a better chance of being offered asylum from the socialists than the communists.
You embrace Obama and are a todady for the DC Establishment.
You don’t belong here, badge worshipper.
toady.
Anyone who didn't know the NSA was doing surveillance under the Patriot Act has had their head in the sand for over 10 years.
Snowden did more than this...he revealed other secrets to other countries...much of it classified data.
He's an OWS punk who's living up to the saying "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" and many on FR are buying it.
Exactly.
He's a far-left commie who is pretending to be a patriot while giving classified data to commie countries.
Amazing how many conservatives are being taken in.
No, I can't. Even Julian Asaige [sp?] and Spc. Manning didn't generate this sort of vivid reaction from the ruling-caste. I think you may be right about the damaging to the government
supposition; if I were to guess: proof of an actual conspiracy against the Constitution by that caste*.
* Possibly one to install a known uneligible into the Presidency and then use that as precedent
*spit* to overthrow/discredit the Constitution-as-a-whole. Then again, the USSC seems to be doing a good job of overthrowing the Constitution all by itself: evidenced when they declared that CA's supreme court could not actually certify standing
.
That, in itself, is quite telling; I think.
Yeah, got to love the big government worshippers. They just want someone to take their money, tell them what to do and have big brother record all their phone calls and emails because some cave dweller might come and get ‘em in their sleep. Tiberius summed it up well...”men fit to be slaves.”
Snowden's not the traitor; our government is.
Somebody's recording ALL our phone calls and emails?
Don't think so though Snowden would have you believe it.
Oh, well, now that totally unknown guy posting on the internet has deemed it so, we can all rest assured that it’s not happening. Glad you were here to share all that technical expertise the whole world was able to see on your detailed resume’.
